March (2007) is going to be a big month for music fans. New albums coming out left, right, and center. In preparation for the new David Usher album, Strange Birds, I’ve decided to review David’s earlier solo works...

If God had Curves is an interesting album, since once again it combines features that were found on earlier works, but it chooses different aspects from David’s talent pool this time around. For starters, Love Will Save the Day comes in as a major single for David, something that was missing from Hallucinations. There’s also a major move away from the harder stuff on this album, with is evident in songs like Souring, Hope, Everything is Alright by Me Now, The Wolves, and Soldering. Another major change change from Hallucinations is the presence of a couple songs that no matter how many times, I just can’t get into. The Wolves and Soldering are songs that are very reminiscent of songs on Little Songs, but just not the better songs. They strike me as being completely unnecessary for the album, and they take away from what is an otherwise great album. There’s also still those songs that you’ll instantly fall in love with, those ones that you swear deserve to be a single but aren’t, but like many of David’s previous works, but on this album he turns those up a notch. The hauntingly beautiful song Souring is worth the price of admission in itself, and the happy Hey Kids is hot on its heels.

This album may not be better than Hallucinations, but it isn’t worse. It all depends on the taste and mood of the listener. If God had Curves has the softer songs, along with the bigger single, but Hallucinations has the fantastic harder songs, plus the great cover of If you Tolerate this Your Children Will be Next.
