Suspension Bridges

Help > Suspension Bridges

This bridge is considered to be the most aesthetic of all types due to the long curved cable that is anchored at the top of two support towers.  Hangers or "ties" connect this cable to the bridge beams which support the bridge deck.

This type of bridge is prone to problems due to torsion forces caused by the wind.  The Tacoma Narrows bridge collapsed due to this force.  A 700 kb (long download) video of this event may be viewed here.
