The main cables that support the deck of the bridge are attached directly
to the towers, which rest on foundations below.
The first bridge that used this technique was the Albert Bridge, built in 1873 in London, England to cross the Thames river. It is 450 feet (204 meters) long. See also arch, beam, moving, suspension and truss bridges.
