1974 MGB GT

This was my everyday driver until retirement in April 2005. That is when I began stripping it down to carry out some much needed repair work and upgrades. (Also to get rid of "Harvest Gold" and replace it with Red)

First order of business was to find and then rebuild an overdrive gearbox that was correct for the year.

Driver side inner frame rail after removing what was left of the metal under the door. Pretty clear what would have happened if I had used the jacking point!

Inner wheel well was not in great shape either!

New rear quarter, inner wheel well, repaired inner frame rail and new metal right out to outer rocker.

New front fender and drivers door too!

Metal on passenger side was replaced in 2003 but rear quarter panel was not touched at that time. It became obvious that it required work. Repairs have now been made and all paint stripped.

The body was totally stripped, glass and interior removed, the front end rebuilt and changed over to wire wheels. A new rear end for wire wheels has been rebuilt and will be installed.

This is what the engine compartment looked like

Update

The transmission is now completely set up and the overdrive wiring is now made up and tested. The engine has been gone over and cleaned up and the two are back together.

Here are a couple of pictures of the engine bay!

Updates

The interiors of the hatch, doors, fenders, bonnet and rear cargo area have all been prepped and painted and all the body panels are aligned and fastened back on the body tub. All of the major mechanical components are back in place. Some minor body work has been carried out on the exterior and the body has been prepped for paint. Special tuning air dam is installed and we should be ready to paint shortly.

Almost finished!

Just a few more items to install and it is ready to drive once again!

Finally being driven!!

After a few minor problems associated with putting a car back on the road after three years we are now enjoying the GT once again. Sure enjoy the OD transmission on longer trips! Just as an aside, this car is now just like the 1967 MGB GT that I had in my youth...red, wire wheels, OD, leather interior. This is probably the only way to recapture your youth! ;>)
