I was born in northern Ontario, Canada in 1956. Several years later my family moved to Calgary, Alberta. My first exposure to photography was in 1976, when I attended a Paul McCartney concert in Seattle, Washington. I decided to photograph my experience, so I rented a camera, got a quick photography lesson from the salesperson, and off to the concert I went. After taking many pictures (and getting removed by bouncers from the back of the stage), I returned to Canada to get my film developed. Seeing the results... I was hooked. I had to buy a camera! I bought a Canon Ftb 35 mm camera. That camera and I were never apart, and no one or any thing was safe from being photographed. An enlarger, developing and printing soon followed. I was in love with photography. About a year or so passed, and I decided I wanted to be a newspaper photographer. With basically no experience, a small portfolio and a lot of BS, I applied and was interviewed for a photographer's position with the Edmonton Sun (no less). No guts, no glory huh! The amazing thing was that through some miracle, I was hired! Several months went by, and I was miserable. The newspaper business was not for me, and I do not do well with inflated egos. So I quit... became a camera salesman, and shot weddings.
As
life goes, I somehow became interested in law enforcement. I left photography on the backburner for over 25 years. I pretty much enjoyed all of my career as a police officer. I saw things and did things that no other profession offers. Although I kept my hand in, photography was secondary to "the job", raising a family and keeping a home. Eventually it was time for me to move on. So... I retired... and photography re-entered my life. The digital camera revolution was in full swing, and without thinking about it I bought one. No film! Take all the images you want! Wow! I was hooked... again... I currently create my images with Nikon digital and Canon film cameras (including my trusty Ftb). Although I own a medium format camera, I rarely use it. I guess it's just not my medium (no pun intended). Although I live in Calgary, my heart is in the country. Hunting/fishing with my father and working on my uncle's farm has given me an overpowering appreciation for the great outdoors. Essentially I'm becoming known as a western photographer. Although I love all photography, presenting the old west and the western way of life through my images is a passion. So much of it is fast disappearing. My images come from my enjoyment of life. If you take the time to look at my work, I hope it gives you pleasure. If you choose to purchase one of my images I will be forever grateful, and proud that you have taken a piece of something I love into your life. Thank you. Brian |
