SHEL SILVERSTEIN -
1932-1999
Passed away while writing
On May 10, 1999, a wonderful artist passed away. Shel Silverstein was a complex combination of poet, cartoonist and song writer. The above scan from the back cover of one of his books says it best.
As a teacher and lover of silly poetry, I have enjoyed many happy hours reading his work. Though he is perhaps best known for the songs "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" (which he penned for Dr. Hook) and "A Boy Named Sue" (for Johnny Cash), I'll always remember his collections of children's poetry and drawings; in particular the books "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic."
I wanted to put one of his cartoons on this site; I figured that was the best way to honor him. As this site is about home boat building, the following cartoon seemed most appropriate.
