The First Day on the water in 1999

Winter is long affair up here in Edmonton, Alberta. We average only about 90 frost-free days a year. As a result the boating season is short. Add to this the fact that spring is a very busy time for me and you end up with a late start for Bradley.

I did get Fanny in the water in May though. We were at Fork Lake visiting my brother's new lake lot. While he was busy deforesting a place for his trailer to park in, I took his oldest daughter Alexandra and her friend Brendan out for a spin; please see the photo that follows.

It was a bit windy that day and we got blown all over the lake, but it was a good time anyway. I'm wearing my brand new Seratus paddling PFD; a gift from my sister in law and her hubby.

To quote Beng, "OK, I know I know...there are clearer pictures of the Lock Ness Monster." Please forgive my long-suffering wife Brenda, she did not have the zoom lens that day. Trust me however, that is (in order from front to back) Alexandra Clarke, Brendan Malacko and me. We eventually got tired of getting blown around and headed in to shore to hunt for snail shells in the pools on the beach. Shortly thereafter, my brother got his truck stuck in the fresh soil he had just recently deprived of trees and we spent a fun-filled hour getting it out. We had to jack up the wheels and put firewood underneath them in order to get some traction; yuck!
