An Exercise in Narcissism

There are few people who don't get at least a little bit of a kick out of seeing themselves portrayed in the media in some way. This portion of my website is dedicated to that rather natural urge; to say to the world "DIG ME!"

I don't claim to be all that interesting, so I realize that this exercise is mostly for my own benefit, but what the hell.

Gee Brad, how do you pay the bills?

I'm glad you asked that. I teach at two schools; Calmar School in (you guessed it!) Calmar, Alberta and Storefront School in Leduc, Alberta. Calmar School is a K-12 school of about 600 students. Storefront School is a alternative delivery school. I teach Information Processing, Communcation Technology, Computer Networking (Cisco Networking Academy), Leadership and High School English. In the past I have taught general Science, Health and for 6 years I taught Instrumental Music.

Formerly, I taught at Leduc Junior High School in Leduc and Ecole Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School in Beaumont. Beaumont is about 10 minutes East of Leduc.

But where do you live Brad?

I live in Edmonton, Alberta, about 20 minutes North of Leduc. Edmonton is the capital of the province and home to a vibrant arts community and the best set of summer festivals on the continent. Of particular note are the "Jazz City" festival (I often perform at this one), the "Edmonton Folk Music Festival" (I volunteer at this one; it's North America's largest Folk Fest) and the "Edmonton Fringe," Canada's first and largest fringe theater festival. Edmonton also is home to the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club (Now featuring 100% less Peter Pocklington in the recipe) and the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club (I bleed green and gold!) Edmonton recently hosted the world's 3rd largest sporting event, the World Track and Field Championships. My niece danced in the closing ceremonies.

Other than building boats, what entertains you Brad?

A fine question. I love music. For the last couple of decades I've been playing percussion. When I was 16 I took up the bass. Between these two instruments, I keep myself pretty busy musically; I play in a number of groups and pit orchestras. Right now I play primarily in a jazz quartet named "In 4." I also love to conduct. For the first 6 years of my teaching career, I taught band; a challenging but rewarding job.

I like to take pictures, though I'm not all that great at it. If I'm not in a photo on this site, chances are I took it. I love old Canon cameras. I have an AE-1 and a TX. I want an A-1, and AT-1 and an FTb. Why? Because they're cool. Outside of the Canon realm, I wouldn't mind getting an old Pentax K-1000; I like those old indestructible standbys.

I love to play with computers. I currently have 4 computers; 1 Macs and 3 PCs. I'm thinking of getting a new Mac (there's nothing faster than a G4!). I try to work in the Linux environment as much as possible as I'm loathe to give the goofballs in Redmond anymore of my money. I plan to be totally open source in 1 year. I've done some programming and web development. Computers are useful tools, but I worry about people who can't seem to differentiate between computers and life

Anything Else?

I took the 1997-98 school year off to pursue my Master's Degree in Instructional Technology at the University of Alberta. As of this writing, I have only my capping project to complete. My most recent course was Window 2000 Server Managment. It was a fun course and I learned a great deal, but I came away from the course convinced that Microsoft can't seem to build anything that's secure, including XP.

Above I mentioned my love of music. These are a couple of shots of a gig I played in St. Albert, Alberta with "In Four," a jazz quartet made up of members of a big band I play with.

Many of the photos were taken at Flathead Lake in Northwestern Montana. It's a paradise I spend time at every summer.

Renting a boat for a day sail. The cost of this process is why I started building.
That's my buddy Craig doing the negotiating.

I forgot to mention that I like to ride horses. This is from a trip I took in 1996 with "Lost Guide Adventure Tours," a guide company run by my friends Bill and Sherry Wesson and Marc Halun.

A reward for Diamond. I've ridden him on a half dozen excursions now, and he has proved himself to be a sweetheart every time.

When I was riding with "Lost Guide," I was astounded at the beautiful alpine flora. This is a sample.

Hiking in Jewel Basin. Jewel Basin is a designated hiking area near Bigfork, Montana. It is a remarkably beautiful place.
