Hemlock Valley / Harrison Lake Run
Comments:
This run has three major components. Lougheed Highway (#7), Hemlock Valley and Harrison Lake.
Lougheed Highway from Albion to Harrison Lake is probably #7 at its finest. After the congestion and traffic light gong-show between Coquitlam and Haney you'll find this stretch surprisingly pleasant. Unfortunately beyond Harrison Lake #7 deteriorates again; this time into long straight stretches that only the point and shoot crowd enjoy.
Hemlock Valley is a short side-detour providing good scenery and decent twisties. For some reason I rarely see other bikes on this run. In any case to reach Hemlock Valley turn off #7 at Harrison Mills. The left fork takes you to Hemlock Valley ski area. The initial stretch climbs immediately via tight switchbacks which are great fun although prone to gravel. Regrettably the pavement ends about half way to the ski area missing the best views. The right fork heads towards Weaver Creek which also hits gravel far too soon. On both forks there is quite a bit of scenic country past the pavement limit so if you are riding a bike that doesn't mind dust keep going and explore. Weaver Creek Rd is often rough due to logging trucks but the gravel to Hemlock Ski Area is usually pretty good.
If you are in the area, Harrison Hot Springs is cool (heheh). A bit of a tourist trap and hellishly busy in mid summer it is still a nice spot for a break, some ice cream and a walk along the beach. Rockwell Rd along the east side of the lake is a short worthwhile run given you've gone that far. Unfortunately you'll hit gravel after only about a half dozen kilometers. Harrison Lake is usually stuffed with bikers on a sunny weekend although more cruising types than sportbikers. Presumably this is because the road is too congested and short to catch the interest of the diehard sportbiker.
