(English Bay - From Cypress Lookout)
I've been thinking about this website for a few years and
finally put it together in January through June of 2001. I live in the Vancouver, BC
area and have been riding for about 10 years. Hooked the moment that
grungy little riding-school 250 roared to life, I've been enthusiastic about riding ever
since. Decent weather, interesting roads, places to see and I'm gone !!
My first motorbike was a 1992 Suzuki GS500E then a 1996 Bandit 1200 followed by a 1984 Goldwing Interstate project bike (aka Fast Freddy the Freightliner) with a couple others mixed in. At over 800lbs, Fast Freddy isn't exactly svelte but amenities such as good storage, weather protection and passenger area compensate nicely when on those longer 2-up trips. However I'm not old enough for a Goldwing (apparently I ride it like a sportbike) so the B12 is still my favorite bike. The GS500E is a decent beginners race bike (ie cheap) but don't expect to win often with it. You can learn more about these bikes including my customizations in the "Favorite Bikes" section.
After more than 200,000 "sportbike" kilometers (that's about 2,000,000 "touring" kilometers!!), I've learned a few things beyond the initial motorcycle course. As I think of them, I add them to my "Practical Tips" section. Some bits are fairly sophisticated ( "curves and cornering" ) while others are quite mundane ( "avoid using Armor-all on your seat"). But hopefully they all are at least semi-useful.
While most people are riding to Squamish, I'm probably
riding to Lillooett (not in the same time I hasten to add...). Or while they are
thinking about it I'm out doing it! In fact
when it comes to
motorcycle riding, most of my friends end the year with more excuses than rides.
So if you're reading this and would like to ride with someone don't be
shy. Drop me a line and we'll go for a spin. Or check out the "Upcoming Rides" section and come along.
I didn't know anyone when I started riding and it took a while to find like-minded riders. A public message board dedicated to finding rides and riders would have been very useful at the time so I've made exactly that on my "Vancouver Message Board" page. The page also includes a Rider Directory listing so people wanting or willing to ride with others can list themselves. All these are intended to help local riders find others to ride with. NOTE: Closed due to excessive spam and maintenance hassle...there are plenty of message boards around town these days for those who like to live in the online world.
Having said all that, this site is primarily about interesting roads. For me, roads are the backbone of the motorcycling experience. Everything springs from that. So most of the effort on this site goes towards documenting my favorite rides. They are routes often traveled in the last ten years but still fun today. All are within a weekend away (some perhaps a long weekend) and very accessible to Lower Mainland riders. Vancouver has a lot of good biking roads. Something for everyone. So feel free to explore the "Interesting Roads" section and then go have some fun !!!
I do have a small ulterior motive with this site.
It's to learn about good motorcycle roads around the Vancouver BC area that I may have
missed. So your challenge is to find ones that I haven't been on !! And
reading about it in a book doesn't count ! I can be reached at BCrider99@hotmail.com.

Note: The four biking images on this page are from the "Langley Run".
