WYRD SISTERS, THE
|
| QUOTE: | "And what do you offer us in return, my poppet?" |
BACKGROUND: |
The concept of men’s destinies being controlled by three women is a common one amongst many cultures; the Norns, the Fates, the Moirai, the Zorya, etc. Generally speaking, they are often associated with making cloth and are attendants at childbirth, and are also associated with the life and death stages of mortals. In appearance, they are most often depicted as three women who partake of each of the major stages of life; the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. This trinity was also the personification of the inevitable destinies of men. Three sisters (called Atropus, Clotho, and Lachesis in the Moirai) regulated the length of each individual’s life by spinning a thread (birth), winding it up (life), and cutting it (death). One identifies the maiden with the night sky (especially the Moon), the matron with the earth, and the crone with the underworld. Another with the air, earth, and sea, respectively. Even the moon can be subdivided, with the waxing moon analogous with the maiden, the full moon with the matron, and the waning moon with the crone. Yet another is connected with agriculture: the maiden is connected with the spring growing season, the matron with the summer ripening season, and the crone with the harvest season of fall/ winter. |
