The Serpent Syndicate was an early supervillain organization formed in the 1930s by the self-styled Serpent, a vaudville hypnotist with big-time criminal aspirations. From the 1950s to the 1970s the organization underwent several internal changes as their focus went from petty thugs after money and power to a more global perspective of world domination. Leadership continued to fluctuate after the assassination of the original Serpent, ranging from King Cobra to Shadowlord, but by far the most successful of these leaders was Madame Viper who developed an extensive underworld network of Serpent Lairs to launch several fiendish agendas.

Characterized by high-tech thefts and byzantine plots, the Serpent Syndicate was finally believed out of business in the 1980s after clashing with the Super Squad and friends, causing the collapse of the Snakepit Lair and the public exposure of Duchess Industries as a puppet front for the villains.

Claims that they were extinct, however, would prove to be premature. Decentralizing and spreading their "nests" around the world, Madame Viper has welded a scattering of old members of the group with the mutant children of previous members to rebuild. With a renewed focus on money and secrecy, they have stuck to white-collar crime and evaded contact with other Exotics. It's taken some time but they are once again strong and a threat, with control over several corporations and even a certain degree of influence over several governments.

Recently a strong Serpent Syndicate network was discovered in operation in Canada. While a small nest there in Toronto was believed dissolved when the organization crashed in the 1980's, the new nests are scattered across the outlying regions of that country.

Once securely around an object or person, the cables can constrict with incredible - and deadly - force.
