BACKGROUND: 
Mortimer Blake had a short, but relatively illustrious career as the minor superhero Digitalis. Although bearing no particular devotion to the cause of justice, he found the career of a superhero well-suited to helping him develop and field-test a wide variety of inventions. He is noted for having taken down a number of classic supervillains such as the Water Wizard (wielder of Triton's Staff), etc.

Although both Mortimer and his wife, the heiress Dolores Shairp, died relatively while young in a 'lab accident', they left behind a considerable legacy of patents and one son, Edward Blake (aka Crucible).
