JAMES C. GARDINER

James C. Gardiner, son of Robert Gardiner, was born in Hibbert Township, Perth County, July 16th, 1857. As a boy of fourteen he became deeply interested in ploughing and began attending ploughing matches held in boh Huron and Perth Counties. At sixteen years of age he won a cup presented by Thomas King, Reeve of Hibbert Township. The cup was in the possession of Hon. James G. Gardiner of Ottawa in 1936. On winning this cup he was ruled out of the boys class, but the following year as a lad of seventeen he won the sweepstakes in the mens class.

On February 14th, 1879 he was married to Elizabeth Brown. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Wilson of St. Marys. They gave themselves with great earnestness to improving the farm. The log house and barn were replaced by a frame building. In 1989 they sold their farm and joined many others who had been caught by the lure of the Western States. Seven years were spent in Iowa, Nebraska and Michigan. In 1896 they returned to their old neighbourhood. They bought an hundred and fifty acre farm and soon they had it paid for. They milked twelve and sometimes fourteen or fifteen cows and frequently when prices were good they brought in three and four hundred dollars per year through the sale of cream. Mr. Gardiner was a good farmer. He liked good horses and possessed quite a number of pedigreed ones. In the year 1920 he was kicked by a horse and never fully recovered. He spent over two years in the Victoria Hospital, London. He passed away July 14, 1926, mourned by his wife and family and a wide circle of friends.
