
The description of Wards life on a record jacket called him a farm boy, harvest hand and logger. He started playing the piano when he was four. His four older brothers all played the fiddle. By 12, Ward started playing with Lorn at barn dances.
In both 1949 and 1950, Ward won first prize at the CNE for fiddling.
In 1952 and 1953 he won the Western Ontario Championship.
In 1953 he won the Canadian Open at Shelburne, Ontario involving 87 contestants. He was chosen to represent Canada that year in the International Fiddling Contest at Louisville State Fair, Louisville, Kentucky.
Ward toured with Wilf Carter from 1954 to 1956.
During 1958 he joined Wilf Carter for a cross-Canada tour which meant travelling 35,405 miles and entertaining 153,475 people. The tour covered eight provinces and played in 108 different cities and towns, appearing on 71 different radio stations.
