Under Construction

In the below, I was arbiter (responsible for supervision) and tournament director (responsible for pairings and record keeping), except ... in 1967 I was just a record keeper. The Olympiads I was just an arbiter, with varying responsibilities. In 1984, a Senior Arbiter, in charge of 6? matches and a cadre of other arbiters. In 2000 the two top tables. In 2004 varying, but usually among the top 7 tables. For the 1988 Candidates Matches, I was assistant arbiter with Carol Jarecki to Svetozar Gligoric. Blitz Qualifiers, I was co-arbiter with Larry Bevand. International #2, co-arbiter with Jerome Bibuld. At the US Championships, I was in title co-arbiter with Carol Jarecki, but in fact she was the chief arbiter. If two numbers of players are given, the first is the size of the section for which I was most responsible, the second was the size of the event for which I had general responsibility. Most of the tournaments are Swiss System. If the number of rounds is one less than the (even) number of players, or twice that, you can guess it was a single or double round-robin.

This might seem like a lot of tournaments, but considering the time span, it is modest. I've been lucky, however, to have been involved in a number of important events.

Historians will cringe that this record was kept in round-by-round rather than player-vs-player fashion. Ominous for those same historians is that for rounds 5 8 9 10 and 11, the number of results missing is odd. And in round 7, there are 6 wins and 8 losses. Hey, I was only 13 years old! And does anyone care at this juncture? I drew Roberts (rd 3) and Harper. Knowing who I played in which round, and using the results above, I was able to make the following partial crosstable. Just for fun. July 2005. The spelling of one name has been changed to protect the innocent. Grin.

10. Blumenfeld, Rudy 1 1 1 1 = 1 1 1 = X 8 1st

Source of the above is a sheet of yellow paper. The loss by Sacks to Hohenburger is circled, perhaps the game wasn't played. The event, held in Boston, was directed by George Koltanowski. There were about 100 players in all. In my preliminary section I won all the games except a loss to GM Robert Byrne. As he lost to somebody else, there had to be a playoff. He won that game, too. So by finishing 3rd in the 2nd final, I guess that made me, at age 16, the 13th best 5-minute chess player in the tournament. It took place on the free day (a Saturday?) in the middle of the US Open.
