I had never been married, and it seemed that I was "Not the marrying type", but on August 21st, 1999, we held a garden party with 50 guests.
We had to tell a few people what was happening, but we forbade them to bring wedding gifts. Nonetheless...
The beautiful invitations which Catherine sent out did not mention a wedding, but some people guessed, in particular the astute group from Victoria.
It was a beautiful sunny day, we had wonderful food, and wonderful music by the group Beaux Eaux (I'd pronounced that Bozo) from Gabriola Island. Jambalaya ...
So when, at ten minutes to three, I announced that Catherine and I were engaged to be married, about 40 of the guests were pleased as punch. However, when I followed with "Since we don't believe in long engagements, the wedding will start in ten minutes" mouths dropped open.
The Groom was dressed in White, and the Bride, after some cogitation (I don't have anything to wear!) was dressed in Black!
Several people said it was the best wedding they had ever been to. Damned by faint praise!
It was the best day of my life. Even better than winning the B.C. Chess Championship!!
