How does one display chess pieces? On the far left are the traditional graphical symbols. Fair enough, but what are the text equivalents? That's the second column. In English. Knight used to be Kt, but N became the standard, or S among composers, from the German Springer. I want symbols which reflect the movement of the pieces, and therefore are non-lingual, and also look OK on a board in html. Thus the white pieces should be easy to tell from the black without relying on colour.
The symbols in the third column are more language free. The v and circumflex (for Black) pay attention to the pawns' forward directional movement. Similarly, lambda, ... The one that leaves me least happy is the + for K. First, Muslims find the cross objectionable. Second, the movement indicated is not that of a king, but of a rook or a wazir. Maybe * is better.
This theme needs to be developed:
background colours to
differentiate the squares.
p = primary
s = secondary
t = tertiary
SD = Sudden
Death
i = increment (Fischer) vs d = delay (Bronstein)

First published in Chess Life, 1969 contest. The empressario of
the contest was Pal Benko, so it was prestigious! Received 3rd

Originally I had the B/a7 on b6, but Finnish postman and study composer extraordinaire Pauli Perkonoja found an alternative solution which involved capturing that bishop at a crucial moment. Somewhere I have his letter ...!?
Spoiler: solution begins below!
