I haven't listed anything about early magazines such as the Canadian Chessner (1930s) or the fine magazine of circa 1900 which was perhaps the leading mag in the Western Hemisphere, despite being published in rural Eastern Ontario. More about some of these later. Nor am I covering provincial magazines.

The colour of each square is the colour of the cover. I tried to follow a pattern so that a subscriber would know pretty much every year which issue was which colour. On the other hand, the same colours could get boring.

Canadian Chess Chat

Canadian Chess Chat was founded by Dan MacAdam as Maritime Chess Chat. Due to other pressures--for all editors, Chess Chat was a labour of love--Chess Chat often slipped publication dates, and unless the accompanying explanatory letter has been saved, a subscriber (now a collector) might not know if an issue is missing. This table (a work in progress) attempts to track all the issues by comparing the cover date with the period covered. Where a year is skipped, I have arbitrarily assigned the first issue of the second year to begin with January of that year.

Daniel Abraham (Abe) Yanofsky (1925-2000) was editor from 1956 in Winnipeg. Confusingly, the volume numbers were restarted at 1.

Eldridge and Jonathan Berry listed under Divinsky, June-December 1972.

Elod Macskasy listed along with Divinsky as editor, Jan-June 1974. Macskasy as problems editor August-October.

Walter (Vlad) Dobrich and Ray Lee were the editors on the first issue of this Toronto-based magazine, arguably the best chess publication in Canada's history. From May 1971, only Dobrich's name appeared. For January 1972 the revamped masthead added Grant Treller (Associate Editor), Lawrence Day (Games Editor), and Larry Buchan (Features Editor). In October 1972, Buchan went up to Associate Editor, replacing Treller. From October 1973, Paul Janicki joined Buchan as Associate Editors, Angela Julian and Ben Paul (to Dec 1973) as Production Assistants, Ken Field as Advertising Manager, and Peter Chatterton for Book Sales. In April 1974, Robert Rubenstein replaced Buchan, Chin-Hua Chen replaced Julian, and David Lavin replaced Chatterton. In June 1974, a revamped masthead showed Dobrich as Publisher, Rubenstein as Editor, Day as Games Editor, Janicki and Chen as Associate Editors, Therese Gallagher over Production, Field in Advertising, and Lavin in Book Sales. Next issue, the Associate Editors were gone, with Janicki taking over from Day as Games Editor, Cindy Lacroix in charge of Production, Field gone, and Gallagher moved over to Book Sales. January 1975 saw another revamp with Dobrich remaining as Publisher, and everybody else as Staff: Gallagher, Janicki, Rubenstein, and Don Heeney. The July-August 1975 final issue showed Frank J. Szarka as Publisher, Paul Janicki as Editor, and Lawrence Day, Raymond Keene, Bent Larsen and Leonid Shamkovich as contributors. In fact, Bent Larsen had been a contributor as early as August 1970, and his monthly column was the highlight of the magazine. Another was drawings by George Kuprejanov, chess master and caricaturist extraordinaire.
