Will Jackson

Interview: pp. 33-38 The Riel Rebellion: A Biographical Approach by Charles and Cynthia Hou

William Henry Jackson, later known as Honore Jaxon, was Riel's personal secretary. He was involved with writing the petitions sent to the goverment concerning both the Metis and the settlers in the North West. He attempted to forge an alliance between the white settlers, the English half-breeds and the Metis and he actively championed the Settler's Union.

As the secretary of the Settler's Union he drafted several petitions concerning settler's rights. These resolutions protest the Dominion government's passage of legislation in the following areas: the raising of revenues from the North-West Territories in an improper manner, charging settlers an unjust price for land, charging settlers unjust school rates, creating monopolies, making improper judicial regulations and laws, the unjust raising of prices by means of the protective tariff, failing to construct public works in order to provide employment for the inhabitants, and the refusal to accept Métis and Indian land title.

Later he helped draft the petition sent to Ottawa with Lawrence Clarke, which outlined the grievances of the settlers.
