Brian is theTechnical Director for the Centre for Interdisciplnary Research in the Mathematical and Computational Sciences (IRMACS), a multi-disciplinarian research centre located at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Brian is also the Collaboration and Visualization Coordinator for WestGrid, a large multi-institutional grid computing project in Western Canada. Brian also leads a small research group in collaboration and visualization at SFU, focusing on the integration of visualization technologies with collaborative environments. His most recent research has focussed around advanced collaboration environments in the support of distributed, scientific research. This work was carried out in association with the Chisel Group at the University of Victoria. Brian lives in North Vancouver, in Beautiful British Columbia. Much of Brian's current research was started during his tenure as a research scientist at the New Media Innovation Centre (NewMIC). Unfortunately, NewMIC closed its doors in November of 2003. Fortunately for Brian he was able to continue much of this work in his current role at SFU. At NewMIC Brian was the Focus Area Leader for the Immersive and Collaborative Environments research program as well as the manager responsible for the NewMIC Immersive Media Lab. Before coming to NewMIC, Brian was a Research Council Officer at the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada's Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (IMTI). While at IMTI he carried out two roles, as the Technology Leader for the Virtual Environments Technology Centre and as a researcher in the Modelling and Visualization Research Group. He was also actively involved in the NRC's GRID computing initiative. Previous to that, Brian was a research scientist with the Australian National University's Department of Computer Science. He was the leader of the ACSys Collaborative Virtual Environments (COVE) Project. He was also a former member of the CAP Research Project's premiere project (in my humble opinion), the ParVis Visualization Project. His primary research areas were in collaborative virtual environments for scientific visualization, virtual environments in general, computer graphics, high performance computing, high performance networking, and software engineering. To earn a little extra cash on the side (and to try and get some honors students fired up about Computer Graphics), Brian also taught a fourth year honors unit at ANU on Computer Graphics. The Australian National University is located in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory and is the national capital of Australia.
