Madame Savant looks at the 2005 BC's - March 7th, 2005only for fun and information purposes please no betting | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seed | Team, Region | Season so far | Odds to win | Big Questions |
| 1 | Penticton, Okanagan | Although they didn't dominate at the Okanagan Championships as some expected they did win. Wins over Sutherland, Mouat and Handsworth make them the favourite | 2-1 | Are the OK's tougher than expected? Or were the Lakers looking ahead? |
| 2 | Handsworth, North Vancouver Lower Mainland | Captured the tough Vancouver & District crown. Playing very well right now. | 3-1 | Is Kirsten Hughes the best guard at provincials? |
| 3 | Sutherland, North Vancouver Lower Mainland | Have played as tough a schedule as any team around and proven battle-weary | 5-1 | After two losses against Pen-hi can they break through? Will it be an all-North Shore semi-final? |
| 4 | Elgin Park, Surrey Fraser Valley | Came basically out of nowhere into the top 5 and stayed there. Playing very well as their Valley Championship attests to. | 6-1 | Can their guards keep hitting? Will they get enough rebounds? |
| 5 | W.J. Mouat, Abbotsford Fraser Valley | Another team that has played a very tough schedule. Always in the semi-finals, but can't seem to crack the Pen/Sutherland/Handsworth level. | 8-1 | Will they get by Elgin? Will their stars shine at the right time? |
| 6 | Oak Bay, Victoria Vancouver Island | Quietly moved into the six spot after sweeping through the city and Island title. Also had some strong wins at the North Shore Top 10 Tournament. Players have improved through playing SVI and going to summer camps. | 12-1 | Will they get behind vets Nicole Mandryk and Maddy Knott? Can their guards handle the pressure from Baker in an interesting first round match-up? |
| 7 | Argyle, North Vancouver Lower Mainland | A top 10 team all year that has already beaten Handsworth in league. Ridge beat Argyle by two at the North Shore Tournament so will be a good rematch. | 15-1 | How many points is that home court advantage worth? |
| 8 | Princess Margaret, Surrey Fraser Valley | The board's favourite team. Have been up and down all season with a few peaks into the Top 15. But they are playing well at the right time - They beat Brookswood and Ridge to get here. | 12-1 | You might've heard of Harleen Sidhu; are the other starters ready for the Big Show? Will Rick Gill be the best dressed coach there? |
| 9 | Prince Rupert Northwest | Have dominated up North. Did fairly well at the North Shore Tournament but the teams they beat are long gone. | 18-1 | Can they step it up against consistently strong competition? |
| 10 | Maple Ridge Fraser Valley | Starting to play well. Ranked high at the start of the season but struggled to match expectations but did lose some talent to senior. | 15-1 | Can Coach Herman bring back that old magic? Can they overcome Argyle's home advantage? |
| 11 | Mt. Baker, Cranbrook East Kootenay | Have feasted on Alberta JV competition but mixed results in their few games in BC. Wins over since departed Mt. Boucherie and Jackson and double-digit losses to Pen and Mouat. | 20-1 | Will the guards make enough shots to stop defenses from keying on Liz Hoodicoff and her wide array of drop-step post moves? |
| 12 | Belmont, Victoria Vancouver Island | Big win at the Islands over top 10 mainstay Dover Bay. Two wins over Oak Bay in league and tournament play but have lost to them the last two times. Struggled against mainland competition at two North Shore tournaments. | 18-1 | Can athletic guards get to the hoop? Will 6' post Sam Preston dominate in the post? |
| 13 | New Westminster Lower Mainland | Not the strongest schedule around but they won their challenge game against a pretty good St. Thomas More team so they deserve to be here. | 25-1 | Is this a team capable of some upsets? |
| 14 | D.P. Todd, Prince George North Central | The top team in the North Central didn't travel to the coast this year so hard to know what they're like. Lost to Rupert by 25 in a tournament. | 28-1 | How will they fare against the big girls? |
| 15 | Norkam, Kamloops Okanagan | A late loophole allows Norkam to be the first Kamloops team to play in the BC's. Had to go the backdoor way and beat Mt. Boucherie to get here. | 25-1 | Are the OK's tougher than expected? Is Norkam a dangerous team best to be avoided if at all possible? |
| 16 | Duchess Park, Prince George North Central | Finished second in their zone championships. | 32-1 | Are the Condors just glad to be here or are they ready to play some basketball? |
| Fab Five - These teams have proven they can play at the highest level | |
|---|---|
| Penticton, Okanagan | The hottest team in the province right now |
| Sutherland, Lower Mainland | Have played the toughest schedule of any team and are battle-tested |
| Brookswood, Fraser Valley | Bobcats hope to improve on last year's fourth place finish |
| Handsworth, Lower Mainland | Slow start after wrist to injury to point guard, have recently shown they can play with anyone |
| Elgin Park, Fraser Valley | A bit of a surprise at the start of the season, but they have shown they belong in the top five |
| Gold level contenders - Just a jump shot off the top 5 | |
| Argyle, Lower Mainland | Pipers the only team I can tell you positively will be at BC's |
| W.J. Moaut, Fraser Valley | Another team with a tough schedule that will be in the running for the Valley title |
| Dover Bay, Vancouver Island | Dolphins have one of the best posts in the province; were close to making the Show last year and are better this year |
| Gleneagle, Fraser Valley | The defending champs came out strong but have lost a few tough ones; this young team will get stronger |
| Silver level contenders - The pieces are there for a deep play-off run | |
| Lord Tweedsmuir, Fraser Valley | Have won some big games and hope to carry that into the always tough Valley play-offs |
| Kitsilano, Lower Mainland | Coached by a former UBC star and led by CPer Zana Williams, Demons are starting to flex their muscle |
| J.L. Jackson, Okanagan | Jacks are back after a slow start as shown by nice win over Mouat |
| M.E.I., Fraser Valley | Theissen always has the Eagles ready come play-off time |
| Belmont, Vancouver Island | Police Tournament title win over Oak Bay nice; can they overcome struggles against mainland teams? |
| Bronze level contenders - Solid teams that could make some noise | |
| Chilliwack, Fraser Valley | Hoping to "Storm" through the competition |
| Oak Bay, Vancouver Island | A talented and athletic team that needs to get by Belmont if they hope to advance to the Big Dance |
| Princess Margaret, Fraser Valley | Harleen Sidhu might be the best player in the prov; if her teammates step up they could go deep |
| Maple Ridge, Fraser Valley | Ramblers have been ranked most of the season and have some talent |
| York House, Lower Mainland | A December win over Kits shows they can play |
| Others - There's plenty of other good teams out there that could step up and go far. Here's a few that have played well throughout the season: | |
| Point Grey, Mission, Prince Rupert, Lambrick Park, St. Thomas More, Baker, Tamanawis, Duchess Park, Claremont | |
Strictly My Opinion - Nov. 7th Craig Lindsay 2004-05 B.C. Un-Official Pre-Season Top 25 - Nov. 28th - This is more in line with the official top 15 only more and unofficial 1. Brookswood, Langley April 16th, 2004 (Craig Lindsay): JUNIOR GIRLS TEAMS TO WATCH FOR IN 2004-05 The following is a list of teams that should be pretty strong next year in junior girls ball in B.C. I know some teams will be left out and I apologize. Keep in mind this is just my thoughts based on what I saw this past year and results gathered. I have grouped teams by zones. Unfortunately, I do not know much about either the North or North Central so they are not represented here. Lower Mainland Fraser Valley Vancouver

MADAME SAVANT ANALYZES THE 2004 B.C.'S:
| Seed | Team | Season so far | Odds to win | Why? |
| 1 | Gleneagle Talons, Coquitlam FV1 | Ranked BC #1 since December. Only loss to Sutherland back in early December. Decent schedule but haven't seen Colquitz at all or Sutherland since the loss. | 2-1 | Have had plenty of close games recently. How will they match up versus the size of a Colquitz or Handsworth? |
| 2 | Colquitz Blue Devils, Victoria VI 1 | Blue Devils only losses this year have come from Sutherland (twice) and Oak Bay. Cruised through the city and Island play-offs. Beaumont might be best junior post in B.C. | 3-1 | Hope to avenge earlier losses to Sutherland. But #7 MEI is no pushover if they meet in the second round. How will Reimer match-up with Beaumont? |
| 3 | Pen-Hi Lakettes, OK 1 | Moved up from nowhere to BC#2 after wins over Sutherland and Ridge at North Shore Top 10 Tourn. 2 and 3 vs. Maggie but won in the Okanagan Valley final. Early loss to Laurie shows vulnerability. | 6-1 | Are they for real? Can they beat Sutherland again? And host Argyle is not an easy out in the first round. |
| 4 | Brookswood Bobcats, Langley FV 2 | Bobcats have been a BC Top 15 all year. Some puzzling losses but have put it together for the Valleys beating MEI and Haney by double digits before falling to Gleneagle. | 8-1 | If Valley is the strongest zone then FV#2 belongs at the 4. Young guns will need to get hot to get by the Footers from Handsworth. |
| 5 | Handsworth Royals, North Vancouver LM 1 | Beat Sutherland in V@D final two weeks after losing to them by 30. Ranked high early but dropped out after losses to since departed and unranked Heritage and Oak Bay at Heritage Tournament. | 10-1 | Obviously can play at a high level and are peaking at the right time. With three solid 6' posts they offer tough match-ups. |
| 6 | Sutherland Sabres, North Vancouver LM 2 | Won the Dover Bay Holiday Tournament and the prestigious Chilliwack Tournament, beating Colquitz in the final. Lost to Pen-Hi at North Shore Top 10. Had to sneak in the backdoor after falling to Handsworth in zone final. | 6-1 | Will Sabres bounce back? Will they use the recent losses as motivation and step it up? My guess is they are too good not to. |
| 7 | M.E.I Eagles., Abbotsford FV 3 | Eagles have been top 10 all year. Solid schedule had them ready for the Valleys. Strong post in Corina Reimer. Have been to the BC final two years in a row and are used to pressure. | 8-1 | Backcourt is a bit of a question mark with the recent wrist fracture to the starting PG. |
| 8 | Princess Margaret Mustangs, Penticton OK 2 | Another team that has been top 10 all year. Lost two of the last three match-ups versus crosstown rivals from Pen-Hi after winning the first two handily. No other losses but haven't played any top ranked teams from out of the interior. | 10-1 | Are they healthy? Will the Mustangs step it up against the tougher competition? |
| 9 | Thomas Haney Thunder, Maple Ridge FV 4 | Haney has been in and out of the Top 15 all season but again have peaked at the right time. A pretty good schedule has them playing well. Knocked BC#5 (last ranking) Mouat and #10 Chilliwack out of Valleys. | 12-1 | Spread it out - Drive and dish, just like the seniors. If they're hot from the outside they will be tough. |
| 10 | Stelly's Stingers, Victoria VI 2 | Boy are they peaking at the right time. Oak Bay, see ya, #6 Dover, bye bye, #12 Lambrick, later. Not great results at Chilliwack at the end of January but playing much better since. | 14-1 | Teams that take them lightly will get Stung like so many top-ranked Island teams before them. Can they keep it up? Was the Island over-rated? or under-rated? |
| 11 | Laurie Tigerettes, Cranbrook EK 1 | Back on Dec. 12th/13th they beat Pen-Hi by 12 but lost to Vernon by 20 in the Penticton Tourn. final. Beat Crowe by 20 recently. Have played well against top Alberta teams. | 18-1 | Tough first round match-up with Sutherland. Can they hang with the big girls? How many discman/ gameboy batteries do you go through on a 12 hour bus ride? |
| 12 | J.L. Crowe Hawks, Trail WK 1 | Hawks beat tough valley squad Lord Tweedsmuir before losing by 8 to #1 Gleneagle at Kelowna Tournament on Jan. 31st. | 22-1 | Hawks hoping to upset Handsworth but will need to play well. |
| 13 | D.P. Todd Trojans, Prince George NC 1 | Trojans have torn through the North Central and subdued all opponents. Didn't made the in-season trip South but did beat Columneetza who lost to Mouat by 20. Whatever that means. | 24-1 | North Central teams have struggled at the BC's in recent years. Could Todd break that streak and bring back some W's? |
| 14 | Argyle Pipers, North Vancouver Host | Argyle have played a pretty tough schedule and beaten some good teams (MEI) but lost to many others (York House, Dover Bay etc.). Unranked since start of season. | 22-1 | Could the home crowd inspire them to some victories? How good would they be with Burke (she's playing senior)? |
| 15 | Prince Rupert Rainmakers NW 1 | Rolled through the competition in the Northwest. Split with Caledonia Seniors! Won the Duchess Park Invitational. Have played well against Alaskan competition. | 28-1 | Will the threes fall like the rain in Rupert? |
16 |
Duchess Park Condors, Prince George NC 2 | Finished ahead of Columneetza who, while you can read 13 above. | 32-1 | Somebody has to be sixteen. Needless to say - tough first round game. |

Williams, Stelly's Stelly's came from fifth place in the Victoria league and rose to second at the Islands and a trip to the BC's. Williams with her quick feet on defense, tough drives to the hoop and ball-handling helped lead Stelly's in upset wins over Oak Bay (BC Top 15) at the cities, and Dover Bay (BC #6 at the last ranking) and Lambrick Park (2nd at Victoria cities and ranked BC #12). Grade: 10 Age: 16

Vancouver, B.C. ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Played on various sports
teams starting in grade three and have recieved various
athletic awards since then. Attended provincials in
summer swimming in gr.4, age group nationals in diving
and when playing soccer on U14 Gold soccer our team was
league, Island, and provincial champions. Last summer I
also had a great time on the SVIBA junior b-ball team. |
VICTORIA PRE-SEASON JUNIOR GIRLS RANKED BY CRAIG (NOV. 14TH, 2004):
COLQUITZ BLUE DEVILS - Return three key starters from last year's Island Champs. Should be a provincial contender with size down low with Beaumont and athletic guards Morris and Carlson.
OAK BAY BREAKERS - Deep and athletic and if the guards can get the ball to powerful post Danica Straith, the Breakers could be a strong top 10 team. Finished second at Grade 9 provincial tournament last year and grade 8's finished first in the city.
CLAREMONT SPARTANS - Leanne Wong is one of the top point guards on the Island but Spartans lack their usual deep, athletic team.
LAMBRICK PARK PRIDE - Kendall Allen and Kelsey Anonsen return to lead the Junior Pride who should battle for one of the four coveted spots at the Islands.
ST. MICHAEL'S UNIVERSITY JAGS - With the experience gathered from night league and summer ball, the Jags should be much better and could take a run at the play-offs if they're bigs play tough. Decent size up front and a solid point guard in Sarah Adair.
ESQUIMALT DOCKERS - Point guard and coach's daughter Kye Barker will lead the always tough and fiesty Dockers.
STELLY'S STINGERS - Shewchuk and Williams both played with SVI Junior this summer and will lead a solid Stinger squad that could surprise some teams.
BELMONT T'HAWKS - Will not be as tall as last year's squad but will be stronger in the backcourt.
REYNOLDS ROADRUNNERS - My old team could be decent with a few leftovers from last year combined with a couple of newcomers like principal's daughter Jenny Harrison and former Lansdowne Flyer Laura Amson.
VICTORIA JUNIOR GIRLS 2003-04 PRE-SEASON ALL-STARS: Nov. 14th (please note this is just my opinion based on what I saw last year and in the summer. I know I will miss some players and I apologize. I will do another all-star list in mid-January and end of the season)
First Team
| Chelsea Beaumont, Colquitz | Post | A third year starter, Chels has improved each year and should help Colquitz contend for another Island title and a potential deep run at the B.C.'s. |
| Danica Straith, Oak Bay | Post | Athletic and talented. Straith is a solid post and will lead the junior Breakers. |
| Leanne Wong, Claremont | Guard | Spartans have been a mainstay at the Junior B.C.'s for the last four years. To keep that streak up Wong will have to step it up and get some help as well. |
| Kate Carlson, Colquitz | Guard | Fast and so strong at getting to the hoop. A good leader and a may be the top defender in town. |
| Kayla Morris, Colquitz | Wing | The third Blue Devil on the pre-season first team. Morris adds a superb outside shot to complement Beaumont and Carlson. |
X
Second Team
| Jamie Shewchuk, Stelly's | Post | Shewchuk got plenty of experience in the summer playing with the SVIBA junior team. Stelly's could be a surprise team with Shewchuk, savvy point guard Maggie Williams and a couple of others. |
| Natasha Salo, Oak Bay | Post | Good size and can jump. Should help take the pressure off Straith. |
| Kelsey Anonsen, Lambrick | Wing | A good athlete and a strong shooter. Only grade 9 but played last year for the junior Pride. |
| Kye Barker, Esquimalt | Guard | This coach's daughter has the smarts and the ability to lead her squad. |
| Sarah Adair, SMU | Guard | A solid ball-handler with the ability to drive to the hoop. Adair can expect to see double teams against most teams unless someone can step up and provide help bringing the ball up. |
Third Team
| Lauren Johnson, SMU | Post | Gained valuable experience and skills playing on the SVIBA Midget team and looks to step up as a major force in the middle. |
| Kendall Allen, Lambrick | Wing | Another strong defender that can handle the ball and hit the open jumper as well. |
| Anna Krysveld, Esquimalt | Post | Tall and athletic. As her post moves improve, Esquimalt will be a contender. |
| Kate Shepherd, Oak Bay | Wing | Only grade 9 but she has as good an outside shot as most junior players. |
| Allie Bowman, Claremont | Guard | Didn't play alot as a grade 9 on a deep Claremont team last year. But will get a chance this year and appears ready after playing plenty of games with the Voodoos club team. |

VICTORIA'S POST-SEASON (FEB. 26TH)
2002-03 ALL-STARS:
Players selected by Craig
based on several factors: Offense, Defense, Rebounding; strength
and success of team in league games, tournaments and play-offs;
leadership, teamwork and other intangibles. This list is just my
opinion and of course arguments could be made for several other
players.
First Team:
| Chelsea Beaumont, Colquitz | Post | Only in grade 9, Beaumont is strong at both ends of the floor with her soft touch and shot-blocking ability. |
| Ashley Yee, Claremont | Wing | Yee has been strong all season for the Spartans with her three point shooting and ability to get to the hoop and finish with that soft touch of hers. |
| Carmen Lapthorne, Arbutus | Wing | One of the top offensive players in the province in the junior ranks. |
| Kate Carlson, Colquitz | Guard | Carlson is the best defensive player on the Island and also finds time to run the point for the Island Champs. |
| Leanne Wong, Claremont | Guard | We all knew she was quick and a strong ball-handler, but Wong has surprised with her three point range. |
Second Team:
| Gillian Seymour, Belmont | Post | Tall and athletic, combined with Brooke Shilling to form formidable frontline for fiesty Belmont. |
| Danica Straith, Oak Bay | Post | A solid grade 9 post for the junior Breakers. Straith plays well at both ends and helped lead Oak Bay to a second place finish in the East Division. |
| Gill Proudfoot, Lansdowne | Wing | Briny Demott was solid at point, but the athletic Proudfoot was the main reason the Flyers were the surprise team with a league win over Arbutus and a fifth place finish at the city play-offs. |
| Felipa Filipi, Esquimalt | Wing | Injuries slowed her down mid-season, but come play-off time Filipi was on her game and helped Dockers upset Oak Bay in the first round of the cities. |
| Holly Fiddick, Arbutus | Guard | Has done a solid job as point guard for Aztecs. Strong defender with amazing quickness. |
Third Team:
| Nicole Winstone, Arbutus | Post | Winstone was the big inside presence for the Aztecs and a big reason why they were top 10 in B.C. all year. |
| Brooke Shilling, Belmont | Post | The other twin tower, Shilling could score inside or block shots and hit the boards on the defensive end. |
| Sarah Darley, Cedar Hill | Wing | Darley played well all season using her size and quickness to get to the hoop for the Celtics who just missed the play-offs. |
| Alyssa Chan, Claremont | Wing | Chan was the third scorer for the Spartans but invaluable when teams keyed too much on Yee or the Wongs. |
| Tegan McInnis, Lambrick Park | Wing | Strong drives to the basket from Mcinnis helped propel Junior Pride into the play-offs in the tough East Division. |
Honourable Mentions:
Arbutus: Jane Anholt,
Shayla Behrens, wings: Athletic swing players for Aztecs are both
in grade 9 and are tough on defense but can also drive it in hard
to the hoop; Cedar Hill: Jen Pearson, guard: Aggressive on
defense and solid at the point for Celts; Claremont: Selena Wong,
guard: Another solid scoring threat for Spartans; Colquitz: Amy
Burton, Kayla Morris, wings: Burton is the veteran presence for
Blue Devils, both can score and play tough D; Esquimalt: Fedra
Filipi, guard: Tough at point for Dockers; Lambrick Park: Kendall
Allan, guard: Tough defender for Pride; Lansdowne: Briny Demott,
guard: Better protect the ball when this undersized speedster in
around; Oak Bay: Natasha Salo, wing: one of many strong grade 9's
for young Breakers; Reynolds: Semra Bukvic, wing, Katie Leahy,
guard: Bukvic can score, while Leahy is strong at point for
Roadrunners; Pacific Christian: Rosie Deboef, guard: leader of
young Pacers can handle the ball and score from anywhere; SMU:
Sarah Adair, Susan Davis, guards: A couple of one point losses to
Lansdowne and Cedar Hill kept the Jags out of the play-offs but
both Adair and Davis played well throughout the season.
Victoria Pre-Season (Nov. 4th) All-Stars:
First Team:
| Brooke Shilling, Belmont | Post | Shilling is tall and athletic and will combine with Seymour to form a formidable twin tower effect. |
| Chelsea Beaumont, Colquitz | Post | This 6' grade 9 post is very mobile and has sweet moves near the hoop. Will have to step up offensive output with Doma gone if Colquitz is to return to B.C.'s. |
| Ashley Yee, Claremont | Wing | Another tall and quick guard/wing player. Yee has a soft touch and soft nifty moves. Had great experience playing with South Vancouver Island Selects top team in the summer. |
| Sarah Darley, Cedar Hill | Wing | Yet another tall and athletic wing. Darley will neat to show leadership and tough rebounding if Celtics are to move past Arbutus, Colquitz etc. to get to the Islands. |
| Leanne Wong, Claremont | Guard | Must make big step from grade 8 ball at Royal Oak last year to leading possibly the top team in junior ball in the province. Wong has the skills and quickness to do it. |
Second Team:
| Gillian Seymour, Belmont | Post | Tall, athletic and strong near the basket. Seymour joined Yee on the SVI Juvenile team for a summer of tough competition. |
| Amy Phipps, Cedar Hill | Post | This might be a theme here but yes she is tall and athletic. If Phipps as well as Darley can be more aggressive and score more inside the Celts will be tough. |
| Carmen Lapthorne, Arbutus | Wing | Certainly fits the bill of being tall and athletic. May be the best pure scorer in Victoria junior ball. If she can start getting to the hoop and scoring, Arbutus will be able to challenge anyone in BC. |
| Susan Davis, SMU | Wing | Very athletic and an improving shot. Davis, a grade 10, will be the leader of a young Blue Devil squad which has some size. |
| Holly Fiddick, Arbutus | Guard | May be the best athlete in Victoria. A solid handle and a much improved shot. Fiddick and Lapthorne both got near-starter minutes last year for the fourth place Aztecs at the BC's. |
Third Team:
| Danica Straith, Oak Bay | Post | Close to six foot and can play and with the added bonus of having a last name. Might have been the best player on the Victoria U15 Selects team for Basketball B.C. |
| Amy Burton, Colquitz | Wing | Entering her third year on the Blue Devils. Burton has experience and solid skills. Will need to step up as a grade 10 to take scoring pressure off of 9's Beaumont and Kate Carlson. |
| Felipa Felipe, Esquimalt | Wing | Strong as a bull with an ill handle and mad skillz. With her sister Fedra, coach's daughter Kye Barker and a tough schedule - the Dockers could be around in late February. |
| Rosie Deboef, Pacific Christian | Wing | Another tall and very athletic wing player. Deboef has solid skills and nobody works harder. Played some with senior team last year but should dominate at junior level. |
| Briney Demott, Lansdowne | Guard | My darkhorse pick. Demott is the best on-the-ball defender around with her quickness and busy hands. She is also a superb ball-handler and passer. If her outside shot improves and the tall trees develops, the Flyers could be in the mix. |
Honourable Mentions: Nicole Winstone, Shayla
Behrens, Jane Anholt, Arbutus: Winstone is a big 6'1 post who has
improved through hard work and perseverance, while guard Behrens
is as quick as the wind. The former Flyer should soar with the
other jets at Arbutus; Kate Carlson, Ivy Li, Colquitz: both are
very athletic. Carlson is the main ball-handler and Li is a
versatile grade 10; Selina Wong, Alex Wright, Ashley Mackay,
Montanna Dinsmore, Claremont: Selena Wong was the Spartans point
guard last year and will probably move to the better suited
offguard to make room for Leanne Wong, Wright suffered a
season-ending knee injury but she has size and experience if she
can bounce back; Both Ashley M and Montanna would probably be
first team if they play junior; Jen Pearson, Cedar Hill: Another
experienced grade 10 for the Celtics. Pearson will be the key at
point guard; Angela Pringle, Lansdowne: Very smart player, strong
defender and plays well with Demott; Fedra Filipa, Kye Barker,
Esquimalt: Fedra is a strong driver, while Barker, only grade 9,
combines smarts with toughness; Natasha Salo, Oak Bay: One of
several talented grade 9's that played on the grade 8 city
champions last year at Oak Bay; Sarah Adair, Claire Lewis, SMU:
Sarah Adair is a heady grade 9 point guard. Lewis returns in
January after a year down under. She is close to 6', strong and
has good hands; Kendall Allen, Lambrick: Another strong grade 9,
Lambrick should be good but may be a year away; Robin Pendleton,
Andrea Amarilli, Vic High: A pair of very good grade 9's at a
traditionally weak basketball school.
