professional contact with the Northwest Coast was as an archaeologist with the
Jessup North Pacific Expedition under Franz Boas. Smith returned to BC at
various times after 1911 as director of archaeology with the Geological Survey
of Canada. He photographed and shot moving pictures extensively in the Bella
Coola Valley between 1920-1924.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: According to Pennock and Capturing History, he moved to Canada from England, the latter stating this happened in 1898, and reached the Elk Valley in March 1904 where he worked as a bookkeepr in Morrissey for the Trites-Wood store. He subsequently established himself as a photographer in Fernie and worked there with Robert Strathearn (1905-1908?). After his move to Vancouver in 1924, he was sales manager with
Gowen Sutton Co. Ltd. by 1926. He started and operated his own firm,
Camera Products (193_-1950+).
Married in 1916 to Ida Merle (d. 1951 02 27), he published a number of illustrated works while in Fernie.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Although he was educated at the University of Toronto in mining engineering and had hoped to mine in the Yukon gold fields, he settled in B.C. where he obtained employment as a land surveyor. He worked under T.S.
Gore in the early 1900s, who was also a photographer, and Swannell bought his first camera in April 1901. Licensed as both a provincial and Dominion land surveyor, he spent the first seven years of his career carrying out a series of important surveys, illustrating his notebooks with photographs, in northern BC. After serving in World War One, he returned to BC and resumed his sureying career, from which he retired in 1932.
