Gleason, Herbert Wendell (1855 06 05, Malden, Mass -1937 10 04).
British Columbia/1905 1906 1912.
Amateur? (visit).
A former pastor, Gleason gave up his spiritual career because of poor health and turned to photography and lecturing in 1899. Well known for his photographs of Henry David Thoreau country, Gleason travelled extensively for images that are considered classics of composition and lighting. He could well be considered the Ansel Adams of his day. A friend of Earl Grey, Governor General of Canada, Gleason visited B.C. on at least three occasions. It is possible he accompanied Earl Grey on the 1906 tour which took place in September. The previous year Gleason had visited the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains in July. The 1912 trip was also made in July.
