BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Emigrating to Toronto in 1882, he and his brother G.T. Wadds studied photography there under H.E. Simpson, " the leading photographer of Toronto" . The Toronto city directories listed David between 1889-1893 as a clerk (1889 Simpson Bros., photographers), photo-printer (1890 H. E. Simpson, photographers), partner with J. C. Wright (1892), and an engraver (1893).
David moved to Vancouver about May 1892 and purchased the Vancouver Photo Co. from J. D. Hall. Joined by his brother, the two operated under the name Wadds Bros.
David left for Nelson on November 22, 1897 to open a branch studio. He was married in Rossland on March 26, 1898 to E. S. Medlock, a retoucher for the Vancouver studio. David operated studios after the turn of the century at Crawford Bay and Fairview, B.C.
His obituary reported his age as 67.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: He emigrated with his brother David to Toronto in 1882 and studied photography under H. E. Simpson. The Toronto city directories between 1889-1892 listed him as a photo-printer (1889 Simpson Bros., photographers), retoucher (1890 H. E. Simpson, photographers) and photographer (1892 H. E. Simpson). David appears to have arrived in Vancouver first, but by November 1892 the studio he had purchased was being called the Wadds Bros.
After David left for Nelson in 1897, G. T. continued to operate under the Wadds Bros. name until the 1912 when the studio was destroyed by fire. He reopened under the name George T. Wadds Studio. He was married to Stella Louise Eldridge of Vancouver in November 1901. He was primarily a portrait photographer.
In 1910 he was vice-president, possibly representing British Columbia, of the Photographers' Association of   the Pacific Northwest.

SUMMARY: Wagness started out as a photographer in Tacoma, Washington. According to his son Ken who was interviewed for the Jon Hahn article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (6 October 1990), his father was lured to the Yukon by his brother-in-law John Lee. John T. Wagness travelled aboard the Humboldt but was unable to support himself or 11 children and his wife as a photographer. He returned to Stanwood and reestablished himself as a successful photographer. The negatives of Yukon life and Puget Sound life were discovered and salvaged by Ken in his brother's barn.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Webb was trained as a physician in Europe but gave up medicine to practice business. He married a daughter of William H. Vanderbilt in 1883 and took over the Wagner Palace Car company shortly thereafter. Utilizing a private railway coach built by his company, Webb and his party journeyed across Canada on the Canadian Pacific Railway to the West Coast where they spent part of April and May. A side trip by steamer took them to Alaska. Webb published the results of his voyage the following year. The Vancouver and Victoria papers devoted several column inches to his comings and goings, including mentions of his photographic activities.

SUMMARY: Wells had made two prior trips to Alaska (1889, 1890) as a reporter before being hired by the Scripps-McCrae League, a primarily US midwest newspaper syndicate, to cover the Klondike gold rush. He arrived at Skagway on 7 August 1897 and went through the White Pass about five days later. He reached Dawson on 20 September. His last letter to his newspaper editor is dated Dawson, 15 December 1897. Wells produced an excellent visual and written record of his travels, one of the few photojournalists to do so, the other being Tappan Adney. Wells returned to Skagway via the White Pass by dogsled carrying urgent and secret despatches that were to be sent to the War Dept. in Washington, D.C. He took a few photos along the way back and even met his colleague John B. Burnham who was on his way out to Juneau. Burnham photographed the Wells party on 1 January 1898 (Wells:177). Skagway was reached on 24 January 1898.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: According to a summary of his career in 1896, " Mr. White came here from Toronto seven years ago, having been for years with J. Fraser Bryce of that city." White established his tent studio for tintype portraits in June 1889, then moved to a building on Carrall St. He relocated to the new Graveley-Spinks Block in November 1891 for which Vancouver architect R. MacKay Fripp had designed the upper floor specifically for White's studio. The premises were latter occupied by photographers H.D. MacKay and Alphonse Savard. White was primarily a portrait photographer, but did venture outdoors. The 1896 newspaper report also noted that he had recently hired a " young lady artist from the United States, who has been connected with leading studios in that country."
He was married on August 14, 1893 to Mattie Faulkner (d. 1939) in Vancouver. She informed Major J.S. Matthews, City Archivist, in June 1939 that her husband had been in the New Westminster Asylum for the Insane for 22 years and that she had operated the studio herself for 15 years.

The image is of two men seated at a round table looking through viewers at stereographs being handed them by a third man also seated.
R.T. Williams came to BC with his family in 1859 it is possible he was apprenticed briefly to one of the operators of the Victoria Theatre Photographic Gallery, but in reminiscing about the theatre in 1933 he did not mention the photo gallery.
Educated at St. Louis College (opened 1864), Victoria, he worked for T. N. Hibben & Co., booksellers, in the late 1860s-early 1870s, and later ran his own bookbinding and publishing business. His provincial business directories are an important source of historical information.

NAME: Willoughby, Richard G.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Like many men of his era, Willoughby drifted west and then north. His principal occupation was as a gold prospector and miner. Although he married 1854, family life appears not to have agreed with him. In 1857, having returned to Missouri from three years in California, Willoughby began to put as much distance as possible between himself and his wife and their infant son. The spring 1858 Fraser River Gold Rush drew him north from California and he eventually found his way to Sitka, Alaska, after participating in the 1860s Cariboo Gold Rush and 1870s Cassiar Gold Rush. He moved to Juneau, Alaska, in the fall 1880 and bought property there for his home in June 1881.
Willoughby, also known as Professor Willoughby, was an amateur photographer and, according to Alaska historian R.N. DeArmond
a master story-teller and entertainer ... One of his most famous exploits was the Silent City hoax in which he peddled hundreds of photographs from a glass plate negative which had allegedly been made at Glacier Bay and showed a ghost city.
Probably the earliest book account of The Silent City photograph is Badlam's The Wonders of Alaska (1891). Badlam misdates the photograph as June 21, 1889. Many other travel guides and descriptive accounts of Alaska published in 1890s and early 1900s speak of The Silent City hoax and all refer to the image as depicting Bristol, England.
Winter & Pond acquired the negative or a good copy print from which they generated two slightly different prints.The version numbered Winter & Pond 101 was published in Jordan's 1897 refutation of the hoax, at which time the photograph was identified as depicting Bristol, England. In 1994 Mattison confirmed with a staff member of the Bristol public library that Willoughby's Silent City photograph was indeed taken in Bristol.
Cole (1980) states that Willoughby purchased a photographic kit in 1887 on a trip to Vancouver Island among the supplies was a box of exposed glass negatives and on one of those was the over-exposed image of Bristol. While the appearance of icebeg mirages is a well-known optical phenomenon called a Fata Morgana (Corliss, 1984), it took the showman genius of " Professor" Willoughby to create the miracle of The Silent City that fooled no one.
Other photographers or studios credited with attempting to photograph The Silent City a year after Willoughby claimed to have done so are photojournalists Miner W. Bruce and L.B. French Miss Maude Badlam and E.H. Husher of I.W. Taber & Co.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: After serving in various naval engagements in New Zealand (1864-1865), Niger (1869), China (1874-1878), he was stationed at Esquimalt as commander of HMS Caroline. When HMS Caroline was dispatched in 1888 to the Skeena River with the 'C' Battery aboard, one of its members, Captain James Peters, was also a photographer. Sir William went on to command HMS Immortalite (1890-1892) and Impregnable (1892), a training ship.
A photograph of the Cowichan Lake Hotel in the BC Archives was identified as " taken by Sir William Wiseman of the Royal Navy."

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Established in New Westminster in November 1868, he opened a branch studio at Moodyville the following March. He left photography in the early 1870s to do business as a cabinet and furniture maker in New Westminster. He operated the Brighton Hotel at Hastings on Burrard Inlet in 1882.
One of his photographs of ships at Moodyville was published as an engraving in the Canadian Illustrated News of June 1, 1872. His daughter, A. L. Withrow (b. 1866), an artist in Victoria, married W. H. Ellis, general manager of the Colonist in 1887.
Withrow took portraits in the carte-de-visite format as well as landscape views, and was a friend of F.G. Claudet.
A year before his death Withrow worked at the Provincial Museum as a curator or caretaker.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: The Colonist reported a boat being fitted out for the taking of photographs of the scenery of Puget Sound, Vancouver Island and the Northwest Coast of BC. The photos were to be sent to the US for transfer to canvas by an artist and later exhibition in the US, Canada and Europe as a panorama.
The president of the company, one J.A. Miller, responded to this bit of publicity with a long letter to the editor of the Colonist. In the letter he noted that the company, organized in Canada West (Ontario), had as its objective the completion of a panorama showing " the entire route from New York to some point on the Fraser River, to be decided upon by the agents who are engaged on the northwest coast, including the West Indies, Aspinwall, Panama, Acapulco, San Francisco, Straits of San Juan del Fuca, Vancouver Island, Victoria city, Puget Sound, San Juan, Fraser River, British Columbia, & c., & c. said panorama to connect with a panorama of such portions of the Eastern Hemisphere as may be deemed advisable, especially Palestine and its associations."
This so-called world panorama was to be exhibited, claimed Miller, at the " World's Fair" on June 2 [1862?] as a specimen of Canadian art. Bad weather had so far prevented the two photographer-artists (the second man was not named by Miller) from completing their work and he expected it to take no more than four weeks of good weather before they returned to Canada West.
The sloop Photograph was advertised for auction on October 19, 1861, but a few days later the paper reported that its sails and ballast had been stolen.
