BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Organized in January 1897, the Camera Club had a
predecessor or possibly rival in another body also known as the Camera Club
which was inaugurated in March 1895 and was reported to have had 40 members
including several women. Rev. W.W.
Baer  was one of the promoters of this earlier organization other
members were M. Gintzburger, E.E. Cracknell, E.B. Deane and Mr. Cooper-Coles.
The formation of the second Camera clubs was noted as being " the first in the
Province" its initial meeting was at the
Edwards Bros. studio. The latter
firm acted as a liaison between the club and the public. By January 22, 1897 a
studio and dark room had been set up above F. J. Painton's music store.
F.T. Salsbury was secretary during
the first year of the 1897 club's existence and
J.T.C. Williams was president from
1897 through 1899. Other officers were Harry Abbott (honorary president), C.M.
Beecher (first vice-president), W. Godrey, second vice-president, A.G. Ferguson
(third vice-president), and C.A. Wood (honorary treasurer). The club was
reported to have 50 members in April 1897.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY:
Established by J.D. Hall as the
Vancouver branch of Hall & Lowe,
this studio was sold to David Wadds. As
Hall was active in sports circles, a great number of group portraits of various
sports teams were taken in his studio. Hall also engaged in outdoors work in
November 1887 it was reported that
Mr. Hall, of the Vancouver Photographic Gallery, secured some
very fine views of the C.P.R. wharf while the S.S. Parthia was here. One of
them shows the steamers Parthia, Princess Louise, Premier and George W. Elder,
all unloading at the wharf, which presents a busy scene. The photograph itself
is very clear and distinct, and is a credit to Mr. Hall's artistic
ability.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: According to an 1864 ad (Park) he " was a pupil of
the celebrated Monsieur Brunellier of Paris, who was recommended to him by Mr.
[John Jabez Edwin] Mayall [1813-1901], the greatest Photographer in England."
Mayall was British and had moved back to London from Philadelphia in 1847 to
open his American Daguerreotype Institution. Brunellier is no longer celebrated
among the annals of photographic history. Vaughan founded the
Victoria Theatre Photographic Gallery
concurrently with his partnership with C.
Fulton. Vaughan formed a partnership with
W.F. Robertson the following
August. After this partnership was dissolved Vaughan used the named
Vaughan's Photographic Gallery. He finally
sold the business in January 1865 when it was announced he was about to leave
for Honduras. He might have instead ended up in Honolulu a carte-de-visite
portrait in the Bishop Museum bears the imprint " J. W. Vaughan" on the back.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY:
Beginning in mid-July 1887 with a brief stop at the just-opened Glacier Hotel,
this talented family of scholars and photographers returned for more studies of
the mountains in 1894, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1900 and on into the twentieth
century. An excellent overview of the family's history and outstanding examples
of their photographs can be found in Cavell's tribute.

Fulton in October 1862, the business was leased or purchased from Vaughan
in January 1865 by G. Robinson.
Robinson sold it to J.A. Craigg in May
1869 S.A. Spencer bought the
business from Craigg in April 1872 and Spencer refitted the gallery.
N. Shakespeare leased the gallery
from Spencer in May 1875 and J.B. Uren
then purchased it from Shakespeare in June 1878. By February 1879 Uren was
operating his own studio in New Westminster. The building housing the gallery
was demolished in October 1882.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Although he arrived in Victoria with the
Royal Engineers as a civilian and
was armed with a photographer's certificate he had earned in England, he
appears not to have practiced professionally. Surviving views of Fort Victoria
appear to be among the earliest in existence. He was listed in the 1874 and
1877 directories as a machinist and gunsmith.

by A.A. Garrison. Vogee's main
occupation, however, was that of a sign painter and wall paper dealer. He was
active in the towns of Dawson, Skagway and Whitehorse between 1898-1902 and
left for Norway with his family in 1908.
