accompanying Schwatka's publications on the 1883 expedition were taken,
according to Sherwood, by Charles A.
Homan. Schwatka described these photographs in a 1900 book on their
journey.
Two later expeditions to Alaska included a sublimely absurd
attempt to scale Mt. St. Elias in 1886 and a trip to Fort Selkirk from Juneau
via the Taku River and Teslin Lake in 1891. Schwatka Lake, Yukon, is named in
his honour. The camera Schwatka took on his 1886 Mt. St. Elias climb was
donated in 1955 to a museum of the University of Alaska (Fairbanks?).

G.R. Fardon in July 1865. He managed
Fardon's studio for a year and then went on to manage

have leased this gallery to Uren &
Hoyt in May 1874 and to have cancelled the lease in October of that year.
In 1867 he was also employed by George
Robinson in the Victoria
Theatre Photographic Gallery, the operation of which he took over in 1875
from S.A. Spencer. He is presumed to have sold the
business to J.B. Uren in June 1878.
He was married in 1859 to Elizabeth Pearson, a native of New York State and a
daughter of Thomas Pearson. Shakespeare is today known outside of photographic
circles because of his philosophy and political career as an anti-Asiatic,
Member of Parliament, and as Victoria's postmaster and mayor.

They moved to Calgary in 1885 and by 1887 S.A. Smythe was taking all of the
photos. He opened a studio in Banff in 1889 but returned to Calgary in the
early 1890s.
S.A. turned up in Vancouver in October 1896 where he was
displaying photos of places around Calgary. The newspaper noted that the
Illustrated London News of August 29, 1896 contains six views of Alberta
by Smythe, all of which were sent to the paper in the fall of 1890. The
following January the same paper reported receiving photos by Smythe of mining
and ranching scenes in BC and the Northwest.
According to the Vernon

HOME ADDRESS/YEAR: View St./1882-1885.
WORK INTERVAL: 1858?-1883.
STATUS: Commercial.
BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: He was one of the pioneers
of 1858 who came to the Colony of Vancouver Island from San Francisco, lured by
the prospects, it is believed, of making money off the flood of miners pouring
in for the Fraser River gold rush. According to his obituary, he headed north
to look for gold after his arrival.
The first notice of his business was
in 1859. One mystery, now solved thanks to researcher Chris Hanna, was his
whereabouts between 1863 and 1871 when he showed up in Barkerville. In October
1863 he sailed with Robert Burnaby for the Queen Charlottes where he was to
" take views of the mines and the surrounding country." There is no evidence he
took any photos. S.A. Spencer appears to have gone on to Alaska. He is listed
in the fall 1870 census of Sitka, Alaska, which was published on December 20,
1870 and reprinted in 1981. Spencer's age is given as 36, his birthplace as
Connecticut, occupation a carpenter, and " Residence at the Club House, works at
the [US Army] Quartermaster Department" . He was not noticed in Victoria again
until 1872 when he purchased the
Victoria Theatre Photographic
Gallery from J.A. Craigg.
During his proprietorship of this gallery he made at least one trip to San
Francisco for new equipment and a retoucher named
Mr. Miller. This followed the
employment by N. Shakespeare of
R.A. Desmond, " late artist of
Spencer's Gallery."
Shakespeare himself leased the Theatre Photographic
Gallery from Spencer in 1875 when the latter moved to Fort St. That studio is
likely the one which also served as headquarters for
Spencer & Hastings. While this partnership
was listed in the 1885 and 1887 directories, Spencer was by the former date
residing in Alert Bay where he was managing the Spencer & [Thomas] Earle
salmon cannery. Hastings was supposed to have bought out Spencer about 1883.
Spencer later served as postmaster of Alert Bay.
The 1881 census showed
him aged 52 -- making him older than the 1870 Sitka census --, a Free Thinker,
American citizen and a bachelor, but he was survived by his wife Annie (nee
Hunt a Kwakiutl native and sister of George Hunt,
Franz Boas' chief informant) and five
sons upon his death.
