SUMMARY: Cantwell is credited with photographing the arrival
of the Portland in Seattle on July 17, 1897. The photograph in
Cohen (1977:12) credited to Cantwell of the Excelsior docking at San
Francisco the day before not only defies physics, it was taken by
Samuel C. Partridge and shows the
vessel departing. Cantwell worked at both photography and
taxidermy. He published The Klondike, A Souvenir (ca. 1901) where
his portrait appears on p. 11, along with photos by
E.A. Hegg. According to a 1930
list of California sourdoughs, he arrived via the Chilkoot Pass in 1898 and
left the Klondike in 1920. The Atwood book states he worked as a
photographer and miner.
According to Seattle photohistorian Michael
Cirelli, he also worked as a photographer in 1903-1904 in Everett, WA, with
Colfax Bart (Bart & Cantwell) and also climbed and photographed Mt.
Baker. He also operated in partnership as Atwood & Cantwell with
F.N. Atwood. After settling in
Los Angeles in 1922, Cantwell worked for the Los Angeles County Museum from
1929 to 1939 when he retired. He was survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret
Cantwell, who died on November 24, 1951.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Caple
is supposed to have arrived in Canada in 1888 where he met
R.H. Trueman through relatives or
friends. The two men formed a partnership and had set up headquarters in
Vancouver by 1890. After Trueman &
Caple had been dissolved towards the end of 1893, both men continued in the
photographic business as N. Caple &
Co. and R.H. Trueman & Co.
Caple seems to have given up advertising himself as a photographer by 1897.
Married in England in 1892 to Florence Kate Le Grix Akerman (1867-1950),
the couple had four sons. He was an active YMCA member and frequently gave
lantern slide entertainments there and elsewhere in the early 1890s.
Coincidentally, both Trueman and Caple died the same year. Norman and Florence Caple are buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver.

BIRTHPLACE:

PLACE OF DEATH: London, UK.
WHERE ACTIVE: New

HOME ADDRESS-YEAR:
WORK INTERVAL: 1860-1873.
STATUS: Amateur.
BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Appointed to manage the assay
office and mint at New Westminster, Claudet arrived in the Colony of British
Columbia from London in February 1860. In June 1860 he visited
Dr. A.R. Benson in Nanaimo, an amateur
photographer with whom Claudet was not impressed. Lady Franklin (1792-1875)
purchased or was given photographs of New Westminster by Claudet on March 13,
1861. Her niece and travelling companion, Sophia Cracroft (1816-1892), called
the views " very interesting." Sent by Governor James Douglas to San Francisco
in November 1861 to purchase equipment for the mint, Claudet may have obtained
additional photographic supplies there he had visited San Francisco earlier in
the year and may also have purchased supplies then. Claudet returned to New
Westminster from San Francisco with his mint equipment in March 1862 on the
same boat which brought Richard and
Hannah Maynard to Victoria.
Some
of Claudet's photographs were sent to the London Exhibition of 1862 along with
specimen coins from the mint. Claudet returned to London in 1873. He was
married in Victoria on September 22, 1863 to Frances Fleury (1836-1899). The
youngest son of talented portrait photographer, Antoine Francois Jean Claudet
(1797-1867), one of Francis Claudet's sons, Frederick G. Claudet of Nanoose
Bay, BC, preserved many of his father's photographs.

NAME: Curtis, Asahel.
LIFE
DATES: 1874 __ __-1941 __ __.
BIRTHPLACE: Le Sueur County, MN.
PLACE
OF DEATH: Seattle, WA.
WHERE/WHEN ACTIVE: Alaska Seattle (1895-1941), WA
Yukon various locales in BC/1897-1931.
WORK INTERVAL: 1895-1941.
STATUS: Commercial.
SUMMARY: Asahel received his intial training from his
famous brother E.S. Curtisolder brother and was first
employed by him beginning about 1895. Edward assigned him to cover
developments in the Yukon in 1897. Asahel left Seattle on the
Rosalie just before the new year began and carried a year's worth of
supplies along with 3,000 glass negatives. An article in Cenury
Illustrated Monthly Magazine (March 1898) by E.S. Curtis is illustrated
with his younger brother's photographs, but credited to the elder Curtis.
This caused a permanent rift between the brothers and Asahel had a difficult
time recovering the negatives.
The Klondike Nugget reported his
arrival in Dawson in late June, noting that “Mr. Curtis is a photographer,
taking views and writing sketches for the Alaska News Syndicate of
Seattle.” Asahel stationed himself in Alaska until 1900 when he
returned to Seattle. His photographs, though not as well known as E.A.
Hegg's, capture equally well the grim determination of the goldseekers.
Like his more famous older brother Edward, he attempted to document the
lives of the Indians in the Washington, but in a more realistic fashion than
that practiced by Edward. Asahel visited BC on several occasions. Among the
sights he photographed in BC were bays, bridges, canyons, cities, lakes,
mountains, Princess Louisa Inlet, rivers, valleys, waterfalls and waterways
(according to a list of subject headings in Frederick &
Engerman).
Asahel Curtis’ later work as an industrial and publicity
photographer based in Seattle until his death serves as one of the most
important visual records of the Pacific Northwest, including British Columbia.
E.S. Curtis never photographed in the Yukon, but he was the official
photographer to Alaska on the (Edward H.) Harriman Expedition of 1899. A
description of E.S. Curtis’s camera gear on this privately financed
scientific expedition appears in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (May 21,
1899/13).
COLLECTIONS/FORMATS: UWL (prints) WSHS (glass negatives +
prints).

WHERE ACTIVE:
Seattle, WA BC (before 1900 ?) Alaska.
BUSINESS ADDRESS-YEAR: Seattle.
HOME ADDRESS-YEAR: Seattle.
WORK INTERVAL: 1891-1900+ (in Seattle).
STATUS: Commercial.
BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Curtis' life story has been
told several times yet the early years of his photographic business have not
been detailed to the extent that it is possible to fix a time prior to 1900
when he might have visited BC. Curtis had two partnerships in Seattle between
1891-1897 as a portrait photographer under the names Rothi & Curtis and
Curtis & Guptil (Holm, 1980). He entered a collection of his photographs in
the New Westminster Provincial Fair of 1898. In 1899 he voyaged to Alaska as
official photographer of the E.H. Harriman expedition. His brother
Asahel Curtis was also a photographer and covered the
Klondike gold rush.
In addition to his posed photographs of British
Columbia Native Indians in the 1900s and 1910s, published as part the
monumental The North American Indian (1907-1930), he also produced a
melodramatic retelling on film of a Kwakiutl legend. This was photographed in
1914 at Deer Island off Fort Rupert, northern Vancouver Island. The film, In
the Land of the Headhunters, was rediscovered and restored with a
soundtrack between 1967 and 1974 it was also retitled as In the Land of the
War Canoes. Motion picture camera operator Edmund Schwinke also
documented the filming with his own 1903 Kodak still camera.
