BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: He arrived in Vancouver in the winter of
1887-1888 and operated as C. S. Bailey
& Co. with F. V.
Bingham and E.
Straube, until 1889. He then formed a partnership with
H.G. Neelands
as Bailey & Neelands
which lasted for little more than a year. The partnership was succeeded by that
of the Bailey Brothers which
consisted of C. S. and William Bailey, 1890+. C. S.
Bailey married Jennie Johnstone on September 4, 1895 and moved to Kamloops the
following month. There is no record of his practicing photography after his
move there. Though he was ill for most of the remainder of his life, he is
credited with managing the Kamloops branch of the Bailey Bros. Ltd. store. He
may have been the first professional photographer from Canada to visit Hawaii
(January-May 1895) his motive was pleasure and not business. Coincidentally,
one of his travelling companions was
E. A. Hegg who
later achieved international fame as a photographer of the Klondike gold rush.
Both photographed together on a tour of Oahu. C. S. Bailey's death at the age
of 27 cut short a promising career.

SUMMARY: Boas, regarded as one of the founders of modern anthropology, learned
photography in Berlin from Hermann Wilhelm Vogel (1854-1898), a photochemist
and inventor who worked with sensitizing photographic film to the colours of
the spectrum. On his first field trip to BC, Boas took pictures of the Cowichan
people. On a later trip in 1888-1889 it is believed he used the skills of
O. C. Hastings whom Boas also
employed in November 1894 at Fort Rupert. In 1888 Boas also hired
E. C. Brooks who was photographing canneries and
sawmills along the Skeena River. Boas knew
S. A. Spencer who had retired from
photography by the late 1880s, but had married Annie Hunt, a Kwakiutl and
sister of George Hunt, one of Boas' most
important informants and a photographer himself beginning in 1901. Hunt would
later figure prominently in E. S.
Curtis' Kwakiutl work. Boas was a member of the Jesup North Pacific

BIRTHPLACE:
PLACE OF DEATH: Honolulu, HI.
WHERE
ACTIVE: Chilkoot Pass Trail Dawson various gold mines, Yukon.
WORK
INTERVAL: 1899-1900.
STATUS: Cinematographer (visit).
SUMMARY: Robert
K. Bonine (1861?-1923 09 11) was part of a Pennsylvania photographic family
centered in the Tyrone/Philadelphia area and not of Canadian origin as Canadian
film historian Peter Morris speculated in Embattled Shadows (reprint,
1992). Robert A. Bonine, his father, photographed the 1889 Johnstown Flood,
while a brother, Elias A. Bonine (1843-1916), travelled around the Western US
taking stereo photographs which his brother published.
According to
Morris, the Edison Manufacturing Company first distributed films in October
1897 that captured the excitement of preparing for the gold rush at a West
Coast seaport. At least three films on this topic were shown: " Loading Baggage
for Klondike, No. 6" " Horse Loading for Klondike, No. 9" and " S.S.
" Willamette" Leaving for Klondike" . A fourth film, " Klondike Gold Rush Lures
Thousands to Seek Fortunes" , may also have been shot by Bonine and released by
the Edison Manufacturing Company in 1898.
The remaining titles,
copyrighted in 1901 and possibly not distributed until then, all depict the
rugged conditions facing the gold seeker. Known titles described by film
historians Colin Browne and Dennis J. Duffy are " Burro Pack Train on the
Chilcoot Pass" " Miles Cannon Tramway" " Packers on the Trail" " Panoramic View
from the White Pass Railroad" " Rocking Gold in the Klondike" and " Washing Gold
on 20 Above Hunker, Klondike" . According to newspaper articles located by
researcher Michael Cirelli, some of these moving pictures were shot in the
summer 1899 by Bonine and Thomas Crahan for the 1900 Paris International
Exposition.
The White Pass & Yukon Railway film was a genre in itself
known as " Phantom Rides" and shot from a platform at the front of a locomotive.
The effect must have been thrilling to audiences a century ago as the train
silently roared through a tunnel then skirted along a testle clinging to the
edge of a bottomless canyon. Morris speculates that Bonine may also have
photographed similar rides through the Kicking Horse Canyon and other
precipitous scenery along the CPR in December 1901 upon his return from Asia.
Among the other Edison films shot by R.K. Bonine are the coronation of
King Edward VII in 1901, the " Arrival of the Governor General, Lord Minto, at
Quebec" in February 1902, and an earthquake-ravaged San Francisco in April
1906. He also took extensive footage for the Edison Manufacturing Company in
the Hawaiian Islands between June and August 1906 (Bonine filming at Waikiki
Beach, Oahu, 1906 photo no._, Baker Collection, Bishop Museum). Paradise of
the Pacific magazine reported that he returned to his home in Orange, New
Jersey, the company town founded by Edison. Bonine returned to Hawaii in 1908
and lived there until his death where he continued to photograph as well as
operate a movie theatre named after himself.
