What advantages do photographers have representing themselves?

• There are quite a few advantages for photographers interested in selling their own work.
• No Commissions to Pay: Photographers get to keep one-hundred percent of their earnings, less any business costs.
• Higher chance of selling images with each inquiry: A photographer who manages to attract inquiries into the availability of their photos has a higher chance of selling with each call, since they have no internal competition.
• Potential for more assignment work: Photographers can usually offer to shoot the image on assignment if they don't happen to have the requested photo on file.
• More Contact with Clients: This also allows photographers to have more personal contact with their clients.
• Responsibility: Those photographers who choose to represent themselves can take full responsibility for their own income

What disadvantages do photographers have selling their own work?

•Getting Phone Calls: Individual photographers have often found it difficult to compete against big agencies. It is hard enough for individual photographers to attract requests in first place, but those who generally do manage to field requests from photo-buyers will usually continue to do so only as long as they are capable of filling the requests. Once they can not fill a given request, the photo buyer will usually start trying somewhere else.

•Time & Administration Costs: Self-representing photographers have also had to bear the responsibility for all costs of owning and maintaining their photographic library. They have had far less legal weight if they have required litigation. They have also been required to stay close to their office or hire staff to send out their images to handle requests made on short notice
