SO WHAT DOES THE EXECUTIVE DO?

The Annual General Meeting of the Calgary Photographic Society will be held during the 1998 February meeting. This is in accordance with the By-Laws.

Elections will be held at that time and now is the time for you to consider supporting the Society by volunteering to be a member of the Executive Committee. The success of the Society depends upon the support of many and the commitment of a few!

Why should you make a commitment? Because the Society needs the help and direction of members who value good photography and who want to learn. The membership needs leadership that can respond to changes in attitude or purpose. The Calgary Photographic Society needs clear direction and new approaches. You can help! You don't have to be a long time member to be on the Executive.

The Executive Committee meets a few times a year, usually at a member's house. One of the biggest challenges is to come up with a list of themes that will inspire and challenge those members who actually take photographs! Other management issues are taken care of with insight and aplomb.

The PRESIDENT usually calls the Executive meetings based on need ---- and chairs those meetings! Other duties include running the regular monthly meetings; arranging for the Christmas Party and calculating who won prizes, arranging the annual Scavenger Hunt, and for these activities, finding suitable prizes. Some Presidents have arranged for post- meeting analysis sessions.

The TREASURER takes the members' fees and keeps the financial records as required by the By-Laws. This position also maintains the current member-ship list, with addresses.

The SECRETARY has two important roles: keeping basic minutes of the Executive and Annual General meetings and, as seen at the regular meetings, keep a record of the judges' scores. Too many

see the Secretary as a recorder and nothing else: the position is of equal importance to other positions in directing the future of the CPS.

Our other Executive members have roles which change as needed. The DIRECTOR IN CHARGE OF PROGRAMMING arranges the presentations which make up the first part of our meetings. This requires getting to know people in the photo milieu of Calgary and beyond. A good back-up presenter is needed for when someone has to cancel at the last minute!

The DIRECTOR OF SEMINARS arranges the seminars and workshops which provide members with the opportunity to learn from experts and from people who have a passion of some aspect of photography. This is often a frustrating role: arrangements are made, members declare their interest but on the actual day-----few turn up! But those that do have a good time!

The DIRECTOR OF ARCHIVES is a legacy from the days when all top scorers were expected to submit a copy of their work to the Archives. Now we take photos of winning ( and other) photos! The lights and stands and judging materials are cared for by the Archivist so the role actually includes preparing for the judging sessions.

The DIRECTOR OF THE NEWSLETTER is always a committed person who tries to get the promises of written submissions delivered in time for the newsletter! On the other hand, the newsletter is an ideal forum for those who have opinions and who have no compunctions about presenting them in writing!!

The PAST PRESIDENT is an ex officio member of the Executive Committee. It is a good position to seek. All that is needed is a two year stint as President! The Past President has the role of supporting the Society and, importantly, browbeating members into volunteering to be on the Executive. Indeed, this article has been written by your Past President who is seeking support for the upcoming elections! YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE NOMINATED!!. Give me your name as a volunteer and I will get many people who will be only too glad to nominate you!

Life is commitment: your turn has come to support the Calgary Photographic Society.

Please call Jeff Perkins to offer yourself as a sacrifice..

Please call Jeff Perkins to volunteer your help. (PLEASE!)

THE PAST PRESIDENT HAS SOMETHING ELSE TO SAY

One of the aims of the Calgary Photographic Society is to assist and encourage members to hone their photo abilities. Recently, I was asked why we have lax standards regarding presentation of images.

Too often an interesting photograph is harmed by the poor presentation. Floppy photos, inadequate size of mount board, peculiar colour choice for mattes, etc..,etc..

Presentation is very important if you take pride in your work. Would it be worth considering the ways things used to be (and still are) in many photographic organizations across the world: set standards?

Would it be wrong of the Society to demand that all images presented by the intermediate and advanced levels be on 16x20 boards (unless the image is larger). Even a 5x7 Polaroid transfer should be so presented. The novice participant would be allowed to present on smaller board but would be encouraged to follow the intermediate and advanced requirement. We would have to write a clear direction so that everyone knows what to do. The end result would be to help participants achieve a level of presentation which is the norm in professional and advanced amateur circles. The counter argument, that we shouldn't set standards which might stop some people participating, is, in my mind, unacceptable. In these times of political correctness and general wishy- washyness, I would suggest we need to set and achieve standards of excellence. If you agree or disagree, please respond by writing a letter to the newsletter! And if you really want to make your opinion heard, join the executive!
