Readers Corner

Judging

We must approach any new or unfamiliar work with an attitude of open receptiveness; with an “innocent eye.” However, it is too late for that; we know that we have lost the so-called “innocent eye” long ago, and that there remains for us only a trace of its function in moments of sudden and great surprise, shock and high ecstasy.

"We should allow the work a full opportunity to present itself as it is; we should approach it with a minimum of prepossessions, a minimum of any kind of specific expectations." -Donald L. Weismann

Rules of Judging
Thanks to Stephen Butt for the write up

Here is a general review of the guidelines for the monthly print critiques:

There are 4 categories into which a print can be entered, open, theme, digital, and exibition. The first 3 categories are broken down into 3 classes, novice, intermediate, and advanced, and the member submitting the print can select the class they feel comfortable in.

Members can submit 2 prints each month, one in each of 2 categories they choose.

A brief description of the categories follows:

Open - This is an image on any topic, and can be created either via traditional darkroom techniques, or can be created digitally, but is normally used for images that are not "obviously" digitally altered. Prints in this category are scored 4 points for "impact", 3 points for "composition", and 3 points for "technical"

Theme - Each month there is a declared theme. The goal of the theme category is to challenge the photographer to create an image that represents their vision of the theme. Prints in this category are scored 6 points for "impact and adherence to the theme", 2 points for "composition", and 2 points for "technical". Since there are 6 points available for "impact and adherence to theme" there can arise the situation where a very good image will receive a low score simply because the judges feel it does not adhere to the theme. Since the print will loose 3 points for not fitting the theme, the maximum score it can receive is 7. Often there will be comments made along the lines of "this print would have scored better in open category". Again, prints in this category can be created via the darkroom, or digitally.

Digital - This category was created to display and discuss digitally manipulated prints. The goal is to discuss and critique the method and effectiveness of the digital manipulation. In this category it is recommended that the photographer provide both a before and after image so that they can receive feedback on the manipulation they have done. This category is scored the same as the open category.

Exhibition - This category is similar to the open category, except that the image is not given a score, it is for photographers that simply want feedback on their image.

Some general "rules" to consider are:

All prints should be mounted in some manner such that they will stand up on the easel without falling over. Prints should NOT be in frames, as the society would feel horrible if the print were to fall and break It is recommended that prints be at least 8x10 so that they can be easily seen by all the society members. Please keep in mind that since our society is all volunteer, including the monthly judges, that there will be differences of opinion and likely differences in the consistency of the scoring. The main reason for entering a print is to get feedback on what the judges and members feel are the good points of the image, and what suggestions for improvement they can provide. As far as the theme goes....the goal is to come up with an interesting way to express the theme, but sometimes as you push the boundaries of expression, the judges might not "see" the theme in the print. The general guideline to consider is "if I were to exhibit this print outside the setting of the of the monthly meetings, would the viewer immediately think of the theme you are trying to get across in your image. Keep in mind that the reason for entering images is to learn and grow in your photography. If the judges and the members disagree with your print, you are either a genius and the members cannot see the "genius" in your image, or maybe you could take the opinions as constructive criticism and try to grow in your photography. Remember that a big part of creating an image for the critique is to have FUN. One last point to consider....we are always looking for volunteers to be the judges, and this is actually a great way to improve your photography. Scoring and commenting on an image forces you to think about what is "right" and what is "wrong" about a particular image. By volunteering to judge the images, sometime in the future before you press the shutter you may have what Oprah calls an AHA moment and say to yourself....if I just change the composition a little, this will be a stronger image.

Elements of Visual Design & Composition - by R. Berdan workshop notes Feedback is welcome.

Calgary Photographic Society – Executive Positions

If you are interested in running for any of the positions please contact one of the executive members.

President: Chairs the monthly meetings, calls for executive meetings usually no more than twice per year, arranges for room rental and signs leases, organizes the annual scavenger hunt, and attends to other business that comes up from time to time. The time commitment outside of the monthly meetings averages about 2 hours per month.

Treasurer: Maintains the societies financial accounts and books, files taxes and annual returns, pays bills, collects the membership dues. The Treasurer also maintains the societies membership list. The time commitment averages 2 hours per month. An accounting background is NOT necessary….will train the right person!

Monthly Programming Director: Arranges for guest speakers for the monthly meetings. Duties include phoning potential speakers, and booking them for a meeting. Time commitment is approximately 1 hour per month.

External Programming Director: Arranges 2 – 4 field trips or seminars per year. The only skills required for this 1-hour per month position is your imagination!

Secretary: Records the scores for the critique at the monthly meetings, and records the minutes for any executive meeting that the president calls. The secretary forwards the results of the critiques to the newsletter editor. Time commitment varies, but last year there was only 1 executive meeting, so it probably worked out to about 3 hours per YEAR.

Archivist: Photographs both the winning and any interesting images that are submitted for the monthly critique, and maintains the archive album. This position requires a camera and about 1-hour per month.

Newsletter Editor: Writes, edits, publishes, and mails the newsletter each month. This is a great position if you like to voice your opinion!! The time commitment is about 2 hours per month.
