Making Exposure Tests

After determining the most important highlight in your image and how you want it to look, the next step is to make the highlights appear the way you want it on the print, says Carson Graves, author of "The Elements of Black-and-White Printing: Going Beyond Darkroom Basics" (Focal Press, 2001, Boston). This involves making an exposure test based on your paper’s ability to produce a highlight that matches your description.

According to Carson, most photographers make exposure tests by progressively uncovering a single small strip of paper while exposing it under the enlarger. This is called a "test strip" because it contains different exposures on a single piece of paper. Unfortunately, he says, each exposure is in a different area of the print: some areas might contain highlights, and others won’t. Because it’s unlikely that your selected highlight will appear in all areas of the test strip, you can’t make an accurate comparison.

What’s more, exposure tests require several different exposures on a single piece of paper. Carson says a law of photochemical reactions--the intermittency effect—-says that dividing an exposure into several shorter time segments produces a different density than a continuous exposure of the same total duration. (Hence, four, 5-second exposures won’t produce the same print tones as a single 20-second exposure.)

Carson says that an accurate exposure test requires you to compare the same highlight at different exposures, and that each exposure be a continuous one.

Concludes Carson, "A valid set of test strips ‘brackets’ the correct exposure. Don’t think that an exposure is correct until you’ve produced at least one that you know is too light, and one that you know is too dark.

Web Crawl

If you have any web sites that you enjoy and would possibly be of interest to others please contact the news letter editor.

Thanks again to Neil Koven, for this months Web Crawl.

The Following web site is Rinus's new web site, and is very well done and worth a look.

Denis Labelle who is working for Rob Berdan for his practicum at www.scienceandart.org designed the complete web site in Flash 6.

It is a well designed site with some of the new bells and whistles that a high tech site can have.

http://www.rinusphoto.com

The web site cannot be seen unless you have Flash installed. Slow connection may also have problems but in my business world everybody is on high speed web connections.

Enjoy,

Rinus

9. SmARTkids [Flash]
http://smartmuseum.uchicago.edu/smartkids/index.html

Created especially for children by the education staff at University of
Chicago's David & Alfred Smart Museum of Art, SmARTkids invites kids to
experience art. The site is divided up in to four main sections: 1)
Artist
Studio, where the visitor can tour a photographer's studio, interview
the
artist, see her develop a photograph, and learn about becoming an
artist, 2)
LOOK and Share, which shows different ways of looking at art, such as
exploring a sculpture or reading the biblical story one painting tells,
2)
Art Detective, a game to match mixed up labels with the correct works of

art, and 4) Art Speak, a glossary of art terms including illustrative
examples and spoken pronunciations. There is a parents' section,
featuring
tips for using the site with children, and a teachers' area, suggesting
methods to integrate SmARTkids and classroom activities. Users can also
select from four background colors: Cream, apple green, peach or blue.

11. Infrared Zoo Gallery
http://sirtf.caltech.edu/EPO/Zoo/zoo.html

Animals have been a furtive ground of exploration for artists for
millennia, and they have been represented elegantly in painting,
sculpture, and photographs, to name just a few of the most popular media
used in their depiction. This novel online collection from the
California Institute of Technology features dozens of animals in a whole
new light: Infrared. Recently, a team of researchers took photographs of
animals with a thermal infrared camera in an attempt to offer visual
evidence of the differences between warm and cold-blooded animals. On
the site, visitors can view photographs of chickens, flamingos, swans,
tigers, and seals taken with this type of camera. The photos give the
ability to see the dramatic temperature variations within the body of
any given animal. The site also features a nice essay on the
significance of being warm or cold blooded, and how these conditions
affect their activity levels and what environments they prefer.

Upcoming External Programs

Here are the dates / times for this years upcoming external events, brought to you by your friendly neighbourhood external programming director.

Downtown / NightLife – Wednesday July 2nd – This is in place of our regular monthly meeting. See the presidents message for meeting time and place.

Rowley Alberta – Sunday July 20th – There are 2 options for this field trip, one is to make a weekend trip to the Drumheller area and meet at Rowley on the Sunday, the other option is to simply drive up to Rowley on the Sunday, it is only about 90minutes away. I am planning on camping in the area that weekend, so if anyone wants to do the same let me know and we can make some reservations. For those that just want to do the day trip, let us know and we will try to help with carpooling etc. Rowley is a neat little town that has been renovated back to what "old Town" Alberta used to look like, complete with post office, general store, some rail cars etc. Might be a good place to try out some B&W Infrared film!

Big Hill Springs Park – Wednesday Aug 6th – This will be in place of our regular monthly meeting. To get to the park take Hwy 1A towards Cochrane, turn North on Hwy 766 (about half way to Cochrane), then turn West on Hwy 567 and follow it along to the park. We will meet in the only parking lot there is out there, and we should try to meet a little earlier than usual to give us enough time to shoot. We are hoping everyone can get there a half-hour earlier at 7:00pm.

Presidents’ Scavenger Hunt & BBQ – Sunday Sept 14th – This is our annual scavenger hunt and BBQ and is meant to be for members and their families. For those who have participated in the past you know it is a lot of fun, and there is a chance that one of your photos might just win a valuable prize. For those that have not participated previously, please contact one of the executive and we will give you all the details.

Painting With Light – Saturday Oct 18th – We are planning to go to a local cemetery and see what kind of images we can achieve by "painting" our subjects with hand held lights. These lights might be flash units, flashlights, lanterns, etc and we will have to use our imagination. The time for this trip will be firmed up in the next few months, but it will likely be around the 7:00pm area.

For further information please call Stephen at 247-6649 or Scott at 932-4484
