NB This was 14 days after 1871 census. Mary told the census she was married but her name was Mahoney. She told the church she was legally married to John Devere and formerly Mary Mahoney. Was the father's name Devere or Devers?
B4 1871 census: Catherine MAHONEY 7 months and Mary MAHONEY 20, married, & Ellen 18, were in house of John & Catherine MAHONEY
C5 1881 census: Kate DEVAR 10 Step dau of Wm Jas TANNER 24 - possibly married to Mary MAHONEY of B4
C6 1881 census: Catherine MAHONEY 11 dau of John MAHONEY
C7 1881 census: Kate MAHONEY 10 boarder with John & Mary CONNOR
A3 could be B1 except mother was Catherine NOT Mary.
A3 could be B4 except mother was Catherine NOT Mary. However there was a Mary in the house.
C5 could be B4

The starting point has to be the baptism certificate for Catherine DEVERE which is almost certainly g'ma Bartlett's. This gives her mother as Mary DEVERE nee MAHONEY, father John DEVERE and her d.o.b. 14 September 1870.

Theory #1:

Catherine MAHONEY was bastard born to Mary MAHONEY 11 September 1870 but not registered.
By the census on 2 April 1871 she was living with her grandparents John & Catherine, her mother Mary 19 and her aunt Ellen 18.
She was baptised Catherine DEVERE on 16 April 1871 at which time her mother was said to be Mary DEVERE nee MAHONEY, father John DEVERE.
In 1873 Mary married William Tanner and in the 1881 census Catherine was listed as Kate DEVAR, step-daughter of William.
In 1891 Catherine married William Edmund BARTLETT. One week later the census showed her new name.

Theory #2:

Catherine MAHONEY was base born to Catherine MAHONEY in Rotherhithe Workhouse 11 September 1870.
By the census on 2 April 1871 she was living with her grandparents John & Catherine, with her aunts Mary 19 and Ellen 18.
There is no death registered for Catherine the elder yet Catherine junior was baptised Catherine DEVERE on 16 April 1871 at which time her mother was said to be Mary DEVERE nee MAHONEY, father John DEVERE.
Mary married William TANNER.
1881 census Catherine was listed as Kate DEVAR, step daughter of William TANNER
In 1891 Catherine married William Edmund BARTLETT. One week later the census showed her new name, BARTLETT.

By 2 April 1871 she was living with her grandparents John & Catherine, with her aunts Mary 19 and Ellen 18.
