Health

Our kittens visit the veterinarian for examination and vaccinations twice (at age 8 to 9 weeks and again at 12 to 13 weeks) before leaving home. Our vet uses Fort Dodge killed vaccine, Fel-O-Vax IV, which is a four-way vaccine for Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calici, Panleukopenia and Chlamydia. Prior to shipping, kittens receive a health inspection, health certificate and , if necessary for shipping, a rabies vaccination.

We guarantee that any kitten will test negative for the Feline Leukemia virus. All Balimoor cats are tested negative for the Leukemia virus or were bred from parents who were tested negative. Any new addition to the household is tested. In the very rare case of a female coming in for stud service, she must test negative. Alternatively, if one of our females is sent out for breeding, she is tested before leaving and only visits a tested male. We do not recommend subsequent vaccination for leukemia as there is no proof that these vaccines are 100% safe.

We guarantee that the kitten leaves the house free of disease or illness. Just prior to shipping, kittens are given a veterinary health check and certificate. The breeder guarantees that the kitten is genetically sound and will replace the kitten with another at no extra cost if the kitten dies of a genetic defect and proof of that defect is given in an autopsy report presented to the breeder.

We would prefer that a buyer not declaw a kitten, as this is a trauma and disfigurement that can cause behavioural problems as well as pain to the kitten. Our kittens learn to use scratching posts and climbers instead of furniture. At least one scratching post should be provided in the new home. Claw clipping about every two weeks is a must. A kitten can usually be deterred from scratching in unacceptable places by the use of a spray bottle.

All kittens sold as pets must be neutered or spayed. This should be done between the ages of 4 and 6 months.

Shipping

Calgary has a busy International airport from which it is possible to ship kittens/cats to most parts of the United States and Canada as well as overseas. Kittens need to be at least 3 months of age before shipping. Our carrier of choice is Air Canada, although flights operated by American, Continental, Northwest, Horizon/Alaska, and United also fly to the United States daily.

Shipping costs vary according to the end destination and the choice of airline. Air Canada is reasonably priced and, with just a few exceptions, carries animals year-round. Within Canada costs are between CAN$50 and $115, depending on distance. In the past, flights to New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Newark, Chicago, Houston, Seattle, San Francisco have generally been within the range of US $50 to $65. American-based airlines are generally more expensive. A recent shipment to Europe cost approximately CAN$165. We have sent kittens safely to Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. Cost of a small sized kennel is CAN$20 or between US$13 and $15, depending on the exchange rates. A medium sized kennel is more expensive and will also result in higher airline shipping costs, since charges are calculated on dimensional weight. There are usually no weather restrictions within Canada. Some flights to the United States can be affected due to temperature conditions (high heat in the summer months in southern states) and may not be available during winter and mid-summer periods, depending on the model of aircraft and the carrier used. Within Canada and the United States, kittens are usually sent with the agreement that airline collect charges are paid by the recipient. Overseas shipping must be prepaid.
