My husband and I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Balimoor is a small "cattery" and the cats are accommodated in our house. The females and a few older kittens live with us as pets. Kittens are usually born in a box either in the kitchen area or a main floor study. Kittens are handled frequently to begin their socialization.
Around three to four weeks of age, when kittens need to be confined to a small space with a litter box for training, they may be moved to one of two kitten cages in an upstairs bedroom which has been converted into a kitten nursery. When they are litter trained they can run free in the kitten room where they have access to various climbers and toys.
This spacious front bedroom has natural light, ventilation from an opening window (except on our sub-zero winter days!) and receives the morning sun. The door to this room was replaced with a similar door which has the wood panels replaced by wire mesh, so that those in the room are not isolated from the rest of the house. A HEPA filter and ionizer runs continuously in order to improve air quality. Occasionally a litter may be raised completely in the study (computer room and my home office space) which has generous outside windows as well as interior glass panels and a glass door, so that those inside can see into the hallway and kitchen area. As the kittens grow older, have had some vaccinations and are reliably litter trained, they may run free in the house under supervision for certain periods of the day. In this way, their socialization continues and they become accustomed to household noises and happenings.
