KAYAK (lake) TOURING:

Wish to break free from tandem lake paddling?
Wish for your boating independence?
Backwater Paddling will teach you the freedom of solo padding.
British Columbia is gifted with many waterways and everywhere that a canoe has traveled, you can now steer your own “ship” to the nooks and crannies of our hide away lakes.
Unlike a backpack trip, you will be “paddling your suitcase”.

SEA (ocean) KAYAKING

Paddling Haida Gwaii or the Baja’s Cortez Sea is now one “Stroke’ closer.
Imagine yourself:
• Experiencing the unique cultural and biological treasures of South Moresby.
• Witnessing the Orcas in Johnstone Strait, in the wild as they congregate to feed on salmon, socialize, rest and to rub on pebble beaches, or
• In the Baja at the Black Mangrove estuaries and the home of Grey whale mating and birthing place.

Let Backwater Paddling bring your long time ambition to reality:
Step 1 - Take our introductory sea-kayak course; on equipment, strokes, self rescue and safety
Step 2 - Rent an ocean-kayak to practice your skills
Step 3 - Select and then book your expedition on the internet with a reputable outfitter.

IT ALL STARTS WITH A BASIC TOURING COURSE . . . .

Common concerns & misconceptions of ocean kayaking:

I gotta be a jock! I don’t want to hold the others up.
Sea kayaking is user friendly sport;
the average day travel is about four hours at a speed around five km/hr.

I’m gonna roll the boat over and drown!.... I will be “trapped” in the boat!
Eskimo roll is not required; gravity will push you out of the boat, you then climb back into your boat; and then pump the water back to the sea. Check out our capsizing course.

Paddling on the vast open sea sounds both boring and dangerous.
Kayaking is a shoreline sport; it is fun to explore all the interesting beach features. Plus, paddling close to the islands is safe and allows for those well deserved breaks.

Sparse limited comfort, with meager food supplies.
Like a backpacking trip; you can easily carry up to 2 weeks supply of gear and food
Unlike a backpack trip you will be “paddling” your suitcase.
