I have one of those thirteen foot / large cockpit“recreational” kayaks for awhile now. Puttering around the lakes for a few hours at time; I love the independence of paddling and that I can manipulate the craft. I am now ready to move on, to seek a further challenge.
What kind of kayak should I get next? Where do I go from here?

ANSWER:
First, you must determine which kayaking discipline that you will enjoy. Like tobogganing, “recreational” kayaks are very user friendly. To figure out your next level, a general guideline I use: if you like the pace of cross county skiing, try out the solitude of kayak touring; and if you like the dynamic of snowboarding or downhill skiing, then the action of river kayaking could be your thing. Backwater Paddling provides programs where you can investigate which kayaking environment you would prefer:
Kayak Touring, an expedition on our Central Interior Lakes,
Sea Kayaking, a guided trip on the West Coast, or
River Kayaking, the thrill of white water splashing in your face.
After you have taken our course you will discover that within these two disciplines, kayak boat designs vary immensely. All touring models differ in length, width and features; a few inches either way will drastically alter the function and performance of a boat. Same as for a river kayak; boat volume/design depends on your body weight and of your desire of from just shooting the rapids to play boating. After trying out and learning about a few models, you will be more ready for your next recreation investment.
