Thumb and Finger Mitts

For men's size medium
Materials:-

1 skein of dark 2 ply homespun yarn (4 oz./113 grams)
1 skein of light 2 ply homespun yarn (4 oz./113 grams)
1 set of double pointed No. 8 or 4.00 mm needles

Abbreviations:-
K = knit
P = purl
tog. = together
st. = stitch
l = light
d = dark

Left Mitt:-

With 4 mm needles cast on 44 sts. Divide sts. on three needles.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 3 ½ inches (9 cm) , having dark and light stripes worked alternately - 2 rounds dark , 1 round light, ending with 2 rounds dark and increasing 11 sts evenly across last round.
Arrange sts on needles - 28 on first needle for back of the hand, 14 on second needle and 13 on third needle.

Begin at back of hand and follow graph for 28 sts. K1 light and 1 dark alternately for 24 sts.
Thumb Gusset - K1 dark, make 1 light, k1 dark, make 1 light, k1 dark. Keeping the first and last stitch of thumb gusset in dark, continue in pattern and increase after the first stitch and before the last stitch in thumb gusset on every third round until there are 15 sts. between the 2 dark sts at each end and ending with the 17th round of the pattern. Place these 15 sts on a holder.

18th round:- Follow graph for 28 sts. knit light and dark sts for 24 sts.
Cast on 4 sts. at end of third needle. Continue knitting to end of graph pattern. Row 28.

Forefinger:- Place 7 sts at beginning of round on one needle and 7 sts at end of round on another needle. Place remaining 42 sts on holder for remainder of mitt. Knit 7 sts for front of finger, cast on 7 sts and place on another needle, knit 7 sts for back of finger. ( 21 sts on three needles). Continue knitting light and dark for 15 rounds.

Next round:- K2 tog. all round. Cut yarn and thread wool ends through darning needle and draw through remaining sts.

Divide remaining 42 sts on 3 needles - 24 sts on first needle for back of hand, 12 sts on second needle and 6 sts on third needle. Pick up and knit 6 sts at base of the forefinger and place on third needle. Knit light and dark sts for 14 rounds. Decrease 1 stitch at beginning and end of first needle ( back of the hand), at the beginning of second needle and end of third needle in every round until there are 16 sts in the round. Always make decreasing sts after the first stitch at the beginning and before the last stitch at the end of a needle. Place sts from second and third needle onto one needle. Cut yarn leaving a strand about 10 inches/ 25 cm long and graft stitches together.

Thumb: Place 15 sts on two needles - 8 and 7. With third needle pick up and knit 8 sts at base of thumb gusset ( 23 sts). Work in light and dark for 15 rounds.

Next round: K2tog, all round, cut yarn, thread through darning needle and draw through sts.

Right Mitt: Work same as left mitt for wrist ribbing, increasing 11 sts in last round. Arrange sts on three needles - 13 sts on first needle, 14 sts on second needle and 28 sts on third needle. Begin at palm of hand with thumb gusset and then work remainder to correspond with left side.

Run in all wool ends neatly and press under damp cloth.
