Family Mitts

Directions are for size 2 to 3 years with changes in parentheses for 3 to 5 years,
5 to 7 years, 8 to 10 years, 11 years to small adult size and adult size.
Mittens take about 1-1/2 (1-3/4) (2) (2-1/2) (2-3/4) (3) ounces of 4-ply knitting worsted weight yarn and Crochet hook size F (4.00mm).
I use a larger hook when making men's mitts. A 5.00mm will do.

ABBREVIATIONS:-
ch...........chain
st...........stitch
sc...........single crochet
sl st........slip stitch.

NOTE:-
Pick up back thread of the stitch except first and last stitch on end and beginning of each row. Here you pick up both front and back threads.

INSTRUCTIONS:-
Chain 55 (64) (73) (81) (87)(91).
1st. Row:- Start in first sc from hook **8 sc (10)(11)(12)(12)(12); 4 sl st (5)(6)(6)(6)(6); 13 sc (14)(16) (19)(22)(24); 4 sl st (5)(6)(6)(6)(6); 13 sc (14)(16)(19)(22)(24); 4 st st (5)(6)(6)(6)(6); ch 1.
Turn and repeat from **. Make 8 rows (9)(10)(11)(12)(12). Turn to make thumb.
8 sc (10)(11)(12)(12)(12); 4 sl st (5)(6)(6)(6)(6); 5 sc (5)(6)(7)(8)(10); ch 11 (11)(13)(15)(19)(22); Skip 20 sts (22)(25)(28)(33)(33).
Fasten into next stitch. 5 sc (6)(6)(7)(8)(10); 4 sl st (5)(6)(6)(6)(6); 8 sc (10)(11)(12)(12)(12). Ch1, turn.
8 sc (10)(11)(12)(12)(12); 4 sl st (5)(6)(6)(6)(6); 9 sc (9)(11)(13)(16)(18); 4 sl st (5)(6)(6)(6)(6); 9 sc (9)(11)(13)(16)(18); 4 sl st (5)(6)(6)(6)(6); 8 sc (10)(11)(12)(12)(12).
Make 2 thumb rows (2)(3)(3)(4)(4). Fasten off.
Fold and sew mitten together.
Make second mitten the same way.
