Chorionic Villus Sampling

Can be performed in 1st trimester from 10-12 wks GA
    technically more difficult than amniocentesis
loss risk of 1.3% vs amniocentesis (0.5%)
Measure fetal heart rate before and after procedure

transcervical vs transabdominal  approach is dictated by placental location, with sample of fetal trophoblasts obtained from fetus. Need to try to obtain ~10 chorionic fronds, by a 19 gauge needle, or biopsy forceps.

Risk of Rh sensitization is controversial, with some reports suggesting Rhogam following CVS increases fetal loss.
