Amniocentesis
Performed at 16wks pic
Collects ~200mL of desquamated fetal cells with culture giving diagnosis after 2-3wks. Can do FISH (rapid fluorescent immunoassay for trisomy 21) to get result in 3days
loss risk 0.5%, and is higher if done prior to 16wks
Prior to performing, do a fetal heart rate, and repeat post amnio.
Amniotic fluid
Fetal skin freely exchanges with amnionic fluid until keritinization at 24wks
16wks 200 mL (900mL at term, then drops to 500mL post term)
Twins:
inject indigo dye in 1st sac prior to 2nd twin amniocentesis
