If you are a male with the surname of Hodgins or any of the variant names then you are encouraged to have a Y-Chromosome DNA test done to determine the Haplogroup for your branch or to increase the number of members tested for a given branch. The link to apply for this test is found at Hodgins Surname DNA Project.

One of the interesting features of  DNA analysis of the male descendants of this surname group is that the variations in surname and DNA results clearly show that many of the branches do not descend from a common male ancestor. In some cases, this may be caused by illegitimate births where the male child carried the name of Hodgins and that has carried on that branch. In other cases, people just took the surname or it changed over time to that of Hodgins or one of the variant names associated with this group. This does not preclude that there are various branches of the Hodgins name that have been evolving from early history.

The slight difference in percentages is caused by the markers that are different having different probabilities of change vs. time.

In the case of Branch-07, the common ancestor is known to be 8-generations removed from the members tested. The common ancestor for Branch-09 is unknown from any known paper trail.
