British Columbia's resilient film and television industry bounced back in 2008-2009 after a difficult period in 2007-2008, according to British Columbia film's annual activity report.
Production spending rose from $943 million in 2007 to $1.2 billion in 2008, approximating 2005 and 2006 levels. A strong Canadian dollar, increased competition from other jurisdictions, the U.S. screenwriters' strike, and other challenges resulted in the drop reported in 2007. B.C. Film Board of Directors Chair Michael Francis pointed out in the report that although foreign production in B.C. grew from $535.6 million to $841.2 million, domestic production shrank from $407.7 million to $365.6 million due to a decline in ad revenue from Canadian broadcasters.
The report also states that the highest number of features ever (40 foreign productions and 25 domestic films, according to the B.C. film commission) were shot in the province. Foreign features shot in B.C. in 2008 included The Day The Earth Stood Still; I Love You, Beth Cooper; Jennifer’s Body; and Night At The Museum 2, while domestic features included Carl Bessai's Cole, Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, and Dim Sum Funeral. Foreign TV series included The L Word, Smallville, and Stargate Atlantis, while Canadian series included Exes & Ohs, The Guard, and Sanctuary.
Tax-credit applications totalled $1.3 billion worth of production activity, producing $617 million in B.C. salaries and wages.

Please give if you can to help protect P&E so it can continue to defend writers as it has for the past eleven years.
