Homebrew (hom'broo') is a term frequently applied to video games that are produced by consumers on proprietary game platforms; in other words, game platforms that are not typically user-programmable, or use proprietary hardware for storage. Also see Fangames (fan-made games).

You can find homebrew applications and games all over the internet - for free! Yes, free. Homebrew doesn't cost anything. Understand that these people don't get paid for their hard work. Some really should. Some devs may ask for donations. I'm all for kicking a good dev a few bucks for their work. After all, they're giving up their free time off from their "real" job to do this.
In order to use homebrew apps and games, you need special hardware. This hardware is seperated into two categories: Slot 1 devices and Slot 2 devices. Slot 1 devices fit in the DS cart slot. They look like DS carts. Most use MicroSD cards to store files. This also makes it easier on the user to transfer files from the PC. Slot 2 devices fit in the GBA cart slot. There are several types of slot 2 devices: GBA cards, RAM expansion (web browser), and Rumble Pak. You can purchase slot 2 cards that have all of these functions (all-in-one).

The first thing you need to do to get started is purchase a slot 1 device and MicroSD card. Slot 2 devices are entirely optional. You really only need to purchase a slot 2 device if you plan on using GBA homebrew, games and applications that require more RAM, or a web browser. (continued)
