BIOS

John Reid:
Guitar, Mandolin, Harmonica,
Vocals

John got his musical start by accompanying his uncles and aunts who were “the band” at family gatherings.  “Everybody played something, and it just made sense that I did too, so I made my first guitar in high school woodwork shop.”  Although graphic design is his trade, music is his passion and countless volunteer hours have been spent at the Calgary Folk Festival and The Nickelodeon Music Club.   Over the years, he has ventured into folk, country, blues, bluegrass, celtic, old timey and gospel and has written and co-written a number of original pieces, some that defy categorization.   He has taught at music camps and is currently the president of the Acoustic Music Society of Calgary.   For over eleven years he was the choir leader at St Johns church in Kensington until the place burned down.   Now, you can find him on Sunday mornings playing mandolin for the choir at St Mikes church on Bow Trail.   “It’s one of the best “gigs” in town” he claims.

Monica Wade:
Guitar, Mandolin, Ukulele,
Shakers, Tamborine, Vocals

Monica, although born in the West, moved to Toronto as a child.  Her love of acoustic music started in high school where her friends all played guitar and most weekends were spent at someone’s house or cottage listening to and singing the likes of the Eagles, America, CCR, Crosby Stills Nash & Young.   She finally got her first guitar in her late teens.   Her love for the mountains brought her back to the West in 1977 and the guitar sat on the shelf for many years.   Finally deciding to take some lessons in 1998 she met Murray Little who introduced her to the FAMI music camp “Where my ability and confidence over the years has soared due to the great musical environment and support of terrific people associate with the FAMI camps”.   Weekly house “jams”, coffee shop open-mic, trips to the Sorrento Swing Camp and vocal lessons have also helped to sustain Monica’s love of music and song.   Monica is supported in her musical endeavours by her husband Murray and daughter Sheena.

Murray Little
Guitar, Mandolin, Electric Bass, Backing Vocals

Murray was born and raised on the Canadian Prairies.   He picked up a guitar in high school and was soon playing folk music, ballads and love songs.   He was later drawn to gospel music and the finger picking blues of Mississippi John Hurt.   His influences have included Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia, Kate Wolf, Eric Bogle, John Prine and David Francey just to name a few.   The FAMI Camp has been a great inspiration for Murray and he as been a steadying participant in FAMI's success: as an instructor, a director and webmaster.   It was at a FAMI camp that Murray started to write songs again, perform publically and where he has met many musical friends.   Murray continues to develop his finger picking style, perfect his Mandolin, write great songs and is currently learning the electric bass. He is always happy to provide his sweet finger picking to the mix and encouragement to his friends.
