February 28, 2005 ------- I contemplated about putting this under March 1, just so I can get a post done for March. As you can tell, I didn't. Here I am, putting a deadline on something that's not even important to get a sense of accomplishment! It's been gorgeous around here these past few weeks, and spring is in the air. Unfortunately, that means we're back to yard work. I love living where we do, honestly, but it can mean yard work for 10 months of the year. Do you realize how many hours of lawn cutting that equals to? Thankfully, lawn cutting is maybe 7 months total - but it's 7 months too much. I'm thinking about teaching Cole how to cut the lawn, but considering we're driving my aunt's drive em lawn mower that's worth more than any of our vehicles, I think I'll be asking for it. Hell, I still have to pay for the replacement blades for when I ran over Cole's golf club. Don't ask..... I keep thinking about buying one of those no gas, no electric lawn cutters that you push around. But, we have almost half an acre of lawn - if I ever think I need to lose weight (actually, I think about it all the time, just never do anything about it), I'll go down that path. I spent my weekend dealing with birthday parties and pruning. Around here, pruning entails me climbing up into our fruit trees and trying to hack down limbs. I try to avoid my own. So far, I've been somewhat successful with my pruning, but I can just imagine what the neighbours think about me up in a tree 10-15 feet in the air. I'm thinking of making :
From the spring issue of Interweave Knits. Now, what I find interesting is that this the the only back view I've seen - it's not in the magazine. And, how close can you see the view? Is the back that awful? Or that great? February 24, 2005 ------- Yay, secret pal!! I got this greatest package from my secret pal today. Although, I can't share it because I ran out of batteries in my digital camera. However, I can tell you about it! I got two balls of Patons Classic Merino in this awesome raspberry colour. They call it Old Rose. There is one skein of Skye Tweed by Classic Elite Yarns in a greeny/tan/yellow colour - very cool! I've always wanted to check out a Classic Elite yarn. A book by Anne Bishop, The House of Gaian. It looks like a great read - I just have to find the time to do so! She also sent me a travel tin candle, scented with lavender - one of my favourite scents! And this cute red bracelet with "LOVE" stamped in it - my daughter has already stolen this from me. There was also a little card in there that she wrote "A book to read by the fire, yarn to knit for yourself. A bracelet to remind you of life's true gift." You know what I love about this? It's that extra little treat that you never know when to expect it or what it might be - a surprise at the end of the day when you really need it. Oh, I have to add to my music list: Blue Moon, Chris Isaak. Harvest Moon, Neil Young. All of My Love, Led Zeppelin February 23, 2005 ------- AAAAACKKK!!! Jane! I can't believe you tagged me! Shoot....here it goes....
I had to look this one up. And I didn't realize we had so many files!!! A couple hundred - give or take a few.
Soca Gold 2004 - as a reminder of our St. Lucia trip to my girlfriend.
Avril Lavigne - My Happy Ending
Okay, I tried to keep it to five, but I have too many. These songs all mean something to me... Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith: A boyfriend in high school made me a tape with all the songs about our relationship. This was a favourite! Lady in Red - Chris De Burgh: First slow song I danced to with my boyfriend in grade 8. Thunderstruck - AC/DC: Used to cruise main with my best friend in grade 12 blasting this song. Wicked Game - Chris Isaak: I've always loved this song. With or Without You - U2: Ditto as above Light My Fire - The Doors: Another boyfriend who introduced me to The Doors. Ball and Chain - Van Morrison: My hubby and I - this is our song! February 18, 2005 ------- I went for lunch today with a friend of mine, and started talking about travelling. I'm a Sagittarius, and love to travel. Weekend getaways, holidays, whatever. If I'm on the road, I'm a happy gal. Only thing is, we haven't done much travelling since the bambinos arrived. However, if I had unlimited resources and time, here are my top five places to visit:
However, because unlimited resources and time are somewhat unrealistic in this present moment in my life, we're settling for hot springs, a weekend trip away and planning for our summer holidays either here or salmon fishing here. February 15, 2005 -------
Linden said dada Sunday night!!!! He's been our strong silent type, with only a few words said up to now. It was so neat to hear! I still working away on my Street Smart sweater, but the sleeves seem to take so long! I wonder why is that?? My LYS brought in tons and tons of new yarn, including this most amazing batch of Noro Kureyon in pinks and greens. I'm drooling as we speak. I'm trying to figure out how I can justify buying some of that for a sweater - can't find the perfect reason yet.... I bought my Secret Pal some yummy yarn today. I'm not sure if she's going to like it, but I'm trying to keep a Canadian theme going here. If I can send everything in my package made in Canada, I think that would be a neat thing to do. February 11, 2005 ------- TGIF! Oh yeah, I'm so happy about that! Linden woke up this morning covered in red bumps. Turns out he had an allergic reaction to something and they're hives. Thank god for that. I couldn't imagine what I'd do if they were chicken pox. Anyways, he's drugged up on Benadryl to take away the itch and reduce the swelling and asleep in his crib. I wonder how many parents would openly admit to giving their kids Benadryl or Gravol just so the kids would go to bed an hour early? We went to parent teacher interviews yesterday. Apparently they're supposed to be student led, where your kid is the "boss" and shows you around the classroom, their work and what they might do during a typical day. Then the teacher talks to you for 5 minutes while 10 other parents are lined up behind you, tapping their toes, waiting to be next. Now, I did love it. It was wonderful to see how proud Cole was of his work and his abilities. And he can speak french fluently, which is just damn amazing. How can a 7 year old pick it up like that?!?!? But, I wonder how, as parents or caregivers, can we trust our children's education to one person with only two scheduled updates a year? I get that parents can come in anytime and talk to the teacher, but what if you just couldn't? You worked full time, single parent and couldn't get the time off to meet up with the teacher to see if they could fit you in during that 3:00 chaos as the kids run out the door screaming (and the teachers retreat into their rooms doing the same). Luckily for us, it's not the case - but the school environment doesn't seem to be supportive in that aspect. It seems unfair that a child who has a parent that can volunteer in the classroom, during events, special occasions, etc. should benefit while another child who's family situation disallows or prevents that. Anyways, I'm just rambling on. The school system is far from ideal and it's difficult for so many parties involved and I understand why so many families pick home schooling or private schools. There just has to be a better way. February 9, 2005 ------- Three days of the flu, and Kass is finally feeling better. She went to daycare this morning. And now, Linden is feeling yucky. He crawled up onto my chest while I was on the couch and promptly fell asleep. At 4:00 p.m. Poor little guy. It just gave me an excuse to call hubby and tell him to pick up Chinese food. I can't get up and disrupt a little baby's sleep to make supper! I've completed 4" of ribbing and I've started the cable pattern on my sleeves. Ribbing is so time consuming. Only 22 more inches to go until my sleeves are done. I'm dreaming of my next project - finish off my sweater from SnB, start a pair of felted clogs, make a sari bag for myself, finish off hubby's sweater, finish off Linden's sweater, make a buttonhole bag - choices, choices. I sent my secret pal another gift! This is the second gift I've sent off - hope she gets it in time for Valentine's Day. February 6, 2005 -------
I've been RAOK'd! Lovely Jennifer made me some stitch markers, and sent along a pattern. They're just lovely and I needed them! I've lost my other set that was given to me. And she made a donation on my behalf to the Unicef Tsunami Fund to get the pattern. How nice is that!?!?! Thanks so much, Jennifer! I'm looking at doing a buttonhole bag but I don't want to buy more yarn. I'd love to do it in pinks and reds like Christine is planning, but I have some leftover Patons Classic that I'll work it up in. I'm NOT going to buy more yarn! It's the Winter Carnival here, and Darren is busy with the snow sculpture contest. He's the chair of that committee and organized it this year. It's always held up at Silver Star. The kids were in the parade, Kass in the first float with Darren (as Darren is on the Winter Carnival committee) and Cole in the speed skating float. We froze our asses off for 2 1/2 hours watching float after float after float. Kids loved it but we were all happy when it was done! Look at these monkeys! It's going to be Cole's birthday tomorrow! When did they get to be so big? Work might be going on strike again next week. This is going to continue on forever until either the government negotiates a contract or legislates them back to work. Considering that it's been legislated that there will be no increases in wages in the contract, it's going to be a long haul. Makes for a busy day for me trying to answer phone calls and get some programming done! February 1, 2005 ------- I'm currently making this sweater (the one on the left):
Although, in no way is it looking like the way I see it in the book. But, I'm going to keep on going and hope for the best. My secret pal contacted me...yay! Hmmm...I wonder who it is? There are these hot springs that are relatively close to us (about a 2-3 hour drive). I'm hoping that we can spend some there with the kids sometime in February or March. The kids are finally getting old enough where we can take off and do these kind of things without having to worry about all the little stuff (like tons and tons of diapers, high chairs, endless naps, baby food, etc. etc.). I haven't gone anywhere with the kids since last March when I had that horrendous drive over the Coquihalla watching people end up in the ditch or bouncing off the meridian.
