ONE
Like trees in a forest, we are all the same
Each called by a different name
Yet connected from within
From the same place we began
Just as trees, the shape and color of our branches differ
They sprang from earth
As we were given birth
Our father from heaven we call the same
For each other we should harbor no shame
As trees grow in harmony rooted in the same soil
We were not meant live in conflict and turmoil
You are my brother
For we have the same father
All things connected, alive to respond
Together as one
God meant for us to unite and bond

OLD GLORY
Thirteen stripes of red and white, fifty white stars on a field of blue,
A symbol of our 50 states, I'm proud of her through and through.
She's waved o'er many a battle field, and o'er thousands of dead men,
From Gettysburg to Iwo Gima, I'm sure she'll wave again.
She's been frayed and burned and torn, I'm so proud as she goes by,
I get goose bunps when I say the Pledge, it brings a tear drop to my eye.
God gave us this great country, that Old Glory does symbolize,
Let's remember those brave soldiers that guarded her with their lives.
July 4th comes once a year, its a very special day,
It gave us Independence for whatever we want to say.
It made us free to come and go, to work and play and love,
So when you see OLD GLORY++ , Give thanks to our Father above

He had a heart.
He had a soul.
He had a purpose.
He had a goal.
On my heels, or in my lap,
Protecting me while I took a nap.
He wasn't just a dog to me.
He was a friend you see.
Always happy to see me.
Always eager to please.
Just having him by my side
Put my mind at ease.
He wasn't just a dog you see,
He was part of our family.
It's so hard to let him go,
I miss him so much.
His wet kisses and his furry touch.
But I know he's in Heaven,
And I know he's okay.
But I just want to hold him
For at least one more day.
Because he wasn't just a dog to me,
He was Momma's Baby.

I LAY HER DOWN KATRINA
All around the water swells.
Where is this place where we once dwelled?
The sounds of songs of strings and horns.
Silent now, too numb to mourn.
No smiling faces to see today.
No laughing children hard at play.
I hold my child close to my breast.
No milk to give, no place to rest.
Upon this rooftop my hope is fading.
All around lamp posts are wading.
What should I do? Where should we go?
How to get there, I do not know.
Has the world forgotten us?
A pail floats by enjoying rust.
I see some smoke and hear a blast.
I've no hope that this too shall pass.
The darkness comes, my child has died.
Last drops of water, the tears I cried.
My child, my love, I lay her down.
I cannot swim, I jump to drown.

NOT ALONE
In a lifetime we endure many emotions
Happiness with heartache, love with pain
Joy with sorrow, tragedy with gain
All which have purpose and with us they remain
As we relate and come to understand
Realizing that all along, this was God's plan
In the turbulence of rejoice and defeat
The ability, he grants us, to become complete
To weigh the difference between good and bad
And experience feelings of joy and sad
To laugh and cry so we may share
Crosses and burdens in life we bear
As if to say in times of darkness, come lean on me
To be alone is not his intent
To walk together is what he meant
He gives hope and faith so we do not fail
And in his likeness we can prevail
Angels he sends us armed with glorious smiles
To walk hand in hand through life's trials
And with his presents, kind words they convey
To lift our spirits and shed light along the way
He gently remind us, we are not alone
And tomorrow is another day

YOU KNOW IT'S LOVE
If the air's on fire
when you speak her name,
if her smiles shames rainbows,
if together you are unstoppable,
you know it's love.
When your eyes first meet
and all the glaciers melt,
you know it's love.
It's love when you throw away
your self-concerns,
when the world disappears
and becomes only the two of you,
when Eden is rediscovered.
If he gives up football Sundays
for country walks,
if she gives up miniseries
for the affection he cannot ask for,
you know it's love.
It's love when wrinkles
and signs of atrophy
are not way stations,
but are seen as beauty
graceful as turning leaves.
When the telegrams of death
no longer can be ignored,
you know it's love
when you open the door
and let your breath
walk behind the one who's gone.

TAKE ME AS I AM
See me as I stand
And know this is me
For what I have to offer
Comes from within
As honest and true to myself
I can be to you
And with this, if you will,
A future we begin
To accept imperfection
As seen in the eyes of others
As what makes the person I am
In comparison with another
As changes come and changes go
In your heart promise to know
The changes in me are my own
And I promise to never ask for change in you
For you as you are
I accept so true
I only ask you take me as I am
And love me as I stand
Then together forever
We may walk hand in hand

THE ONES WHO HAVE LEFT ME BEHIND
There are those that have gone to a far better place;
Who have danced through my life in a state of grace.
But who can blame them, or who could even wonder why they went;
And left me here with tattered emotions and tears all but spent.
One day I will join them when the Lord calls me home;
But right now I will grieve but I will not grieve alone!
What gifts they have left me – what joy they have brought;
It most certainly is worth the price of tears they have wrought.
For the day will come when I will join them above;
And I will rejoice and abound in the Lord's most gracious love.
No tears will I shed and sadness will be no more;
For my empty arms will be filled as they were before!
I wonder whom I will leave behind when it's my turn to go;
Will they know without question they were loved more than they could know?
I'm sure maybe a few tears will be shed;
And maybe a word or two spoken of the life I led.
But one thing is for certain and this I surely know;
I will be waiting for them with arms wide open when it's their turn to go!

PATRIOT CHILDREN
As children in school there was a verse we had to learn
And from the very first we were way too young to discern
But as time marched by and a few years slipped past
We were to finally learn what that verse meant at last!
We learned of George Washington and Francis Scott Key
How through battle and politics we were now called free
How Betsy Ross was the first to sew the red, white and blue
And how the signing of one document made dreams come true.
Diligently we quoted that very same verse
With a bit more understanding than we had at first
We sadly learned when our “one nation” became two
And the South rose against the young nation so new.
We studied the Indian wars and the cries of the Alamo
And read with sadness the troubles of that time so long ago.
But aggression from within was no longer to be
In the World Wars the enemies were now from over the sea.
Babes no more but the verse was still the same
And we knew in our hearts that this was no game.
We read about Korea but Vietnam was on the news each night
Defenders we were because the cause was just and right.
School is just a memory for the children of that sweet yesterday,
The verse holds new meaning and our loyalties will never sway.
Through the Gulf War and a menace named Hussein,
We learned that our Nation was “One” once again.
Now we are faced with evil from a new source,
But never will they match the power of our force.
For as one voice we repeat the verse that forever will be
The allegiance we owe to a flag that proclaims to all we are free!

AWAKENED
Do you know the moment between dark and dawn;
When wakefulness eludes and sleep holds on?
A time when Angels whispered wisdoms are seldom heard;
But instead are shunned with never a responsive word.
The busy lives we lead will once again intrude;
While precious moments of rest must now conclude.
It is during this time when dreams come to an end;
Only to be reborn when darkness and sleep fall again.
Do we spare a moment to reflect on that time lost;
Never stopping to wonder if it was worth the cost?
What a joy it would be if we would begin our day;
Spending that time listening to what the Angels had to say!
So I slept one night in peaceful slumber;
And I awoke the next morn in a state of wonder!
For not only did I tarry a moment to listen and learn;
I was blessed with a gift I didn't even know I had yearned.
It was the sound of peace and the gentle brush of wings;
The Angels were whispering a number of things!
How they will watch and protect me this day;
For our Lord had told them I would need them in some way!
My days are still busy and my life never seems to rest;
But there is never a day that I not know I've been Blessed.
For our Lord has sent His Angels near;
And I know in my heart there will never be anything to fear!

MAMA'S TATTERED QUILT
Mama's tattered quilt
worn beyond repair
When I touch the ragged patches
my memories take me there
There, where she held me
in her loving arms
There, when the patches
were bright and soft and warm
Childhood fades away
oft times ragged edges felt
But, I still feel Mama's love
when I touch her tattered quilt

Three Times Born
I was born into this world
With a brand new body
When I was saved by His amazing grace
I was born again
With a brand new soul
When I passed on to Heaven
I was once and forever more born
With a brand new body
No aches or pains
No heartaches, sorrow, or shame
No worries, tears, or fears
Just Glory, gladness, and cheer
Forever more
