Jig Flies
The fact is, there are not a whole lot of brook trout anglers who use jigs--but there should be. Jigs are highly versatile: you can swim a jig at shallow or medium depths by holding your rod tip high and retrieving the lure quickly. You can swing a jig in the current with an across-and-downstream cast. You can dead-drift near the bottom. Or jig vertically at very specific depths in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and ponds. I prefer to cast towards the bank or up on the reef and remember to fish close to the bottom. Be prepared to lose a few to the boulders. These attractor patterns are retrieved fairly fast and don't slow down if you see a brookie about to hit as they seem to sense something is wrong and simply veer away....But it gets the heart pumping.
Jigs also imitate a wide variety of trout foods--which food specifically depends on how the jig is dressed. Most of these ones seem to represent a minnow or sculpin. I prefer the 1/4 oz. jig head, but use 1/8th and 3/8ths oz. heads depending on current or depth desired for the rate of retrieve. These are tied upsidedown to a normal trout fly.
While I don't sell my jig flies, a local company below uses the original Dan Klatt jig fly pattern.
