In Dunedin’s Northern Cemetery Lies A Grave of Joseph FARRA.

Joseph FARRA was born in Manchester, England, in 1829, and at some stage emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, probably chasing gold. In 1855, he married Janet PORTEOUS in Melbourne. In 1862, he and his wife and two sons Thomas Porteous (b. 1856) and James Fawcett (b. 1856) travelled to Dunedin on the vessel "ALDINGA’.

On his arrival in Dunedin, he was told only Presbyterians should settle there and as he was an Anglican he should proceed to Christchurch. Undismayed, he nevertheless made his home there in 1863.

That year, Mr. Farra established a business as a tinsmith, japanned, and colonial oven and spouting manufacturer.

In 1885, Thomas Porteous FARRA, James Fawcett FARRA, who learned the business under their father’s guidance took over, the firm continuing as T and J Farra until July 1897, when Charles Joseph FARRA was admitted to the partnership which became Farra Bros.

It's not often I take the opportunity to brag about my own, we have a son and family living in Nunawading in Melbourne and the two boys are both doing well at football, eldest Ben plays with Blackburn under 18’s and has over 100 games behind him, youngest Sam has just played 50 games in Under 12’s and competed in the grand final. Our son Graham is Secretary and First Aid man for U 12’s, he says a rub with a smelly towel and a Bandaid on tender spots works wonders on the eager young boys. Granddaughter Caitlin is also part of the team carrying the water bottle to the players on the ground, she gets good pay as well - a free cup of hot chips after the game. The club is having a very good year with 7 out of ten teams making the finals this season.

BETTY-ANNE PORTEOUS (published on August 6, 2011) Winnipeg Free Press

BETTY-ANNE PORTEOUS anne.jpg (51915 bytes)

Betty-Anne passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 4, 2011. Remaining to cherish her memory are her loving family members: daughter Doneta Brotchie (Harry), daughter Roberta McLean (Bruce), granddaughter Kendall McLean, grandson Kevin McLean, sisters-in-law Muriel James and Catherine Waytiuk, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was born in Selkirk, Manitoba and lived her early life there before moving to Winnipeg. As a young woman she was an avid skier and roller skater and she performed in gala roller skating shows as well. It was while working at the T. Eaton Company that she met the love of her life, Bill Porteous. He finally won her over with his third proposal and they were married on June 11, 1948. Theirs was a wonderful marriage, filled with love, first for each other, and then for their two daughters, Doneta Arlene and Roberta Anne. Tragically, our Dad passed away very suddenly on June 11, 1959, and Mom was left to raise two small girls on her own. Her daughters remained her priority for the rest of her life. She sometimes worked at three different jobs at once to allow her to be home for meals and she spent as much time as possible with us. Her career was varied to say the least. She initially operated an accredited kindergarten from her home and worked at Radio Station CJOB as Betty O'Bee. Her roles at CJOB included off-site public relations and remotes, product demonstrations for sponsors and advertisers and an on-air radio program. She garnered a following of fans and made many friends during her time with CJOB. She later represented Guerlain Fragrances and worked at Health Sciences Centre. Mom was fiercely proud of her daughters and she was a very involved and loving part of our lives. With the birth of her grandson Kevin William and granddaughter Kendall Elizabeth Anne, Mom became a grandmother who was always present for the special moments and who gave freely of her time and her love. Mom made lifelong friends of all generations wherever she went. She was always ready with a helping hand and was quick to say yes, to any outing, trip or adventure that came her way. Her young at heart approach to life, her boundless energy and her careful attention to being at her best made time spent with her a real treat. The sparkle in her beautiful blue eyes, her incredible smile, her wisdom, her determination, her strength, her courage and her enthusiastic participation in the lives of those she touched will never be forgotten. Our sincere thanks to the staff at Vista Park Lodge, where Mom resided for the past three years, who have cared for her as the special person she was. Universally they have described her as such a sweet lady and we know she loved them back the way they showed love to her. In particular, Shelby, Maggie, Karen, Pat and Claudette have gone above and beyond in caring for Mom and for that we are truly grateful. A Memorial reception will take place on Tuesday August 9, 2011, at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. at 10:00 a.m.. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Betty-Anne and Bill Porteous Fund at The Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 0X3.

Porteous

Recorded in several spellings forms including Portus, Porteous, Portriss and Portress, this is arguably an Anglo-Scottish surname, but of pre medieval French origins. Introduced into England after the Norman Invasion of 1066, it derives either from the word "portus" which described someone who lived in the lodge at the entrance to a castle or manor house, from the words "port", meaning gateway or entrance, and "hous", a house, or though less likely, the name may have originated as a nickname for a hard-working man. In this case the origination is from the Old French word "porteour", and describes a porter, one who carried loads. The name is first recorded in the late 13th Century (see below), whilst Robertus de Porterhouse appears in the Poll Tax Records of Yorkshire, in 1379. The name is widespread in Scotland, where it first appears in 1443, when one John Pertus was recorded as owning lands in Fife, whilst on November 7th 1597, Agnes Porteous and John Gray were married at Edinburgh. Recordings in England include Robert Portres who married Elizabeth Bamsler at St John's Hackney, on July 8th 1599, and Ane Portriss who married Timothye Weaver at St James Clerkenwell, on June 6th 1667. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert Portehors. This was dated 1273, in the "Hundred Rolls" register during the reign of King Edward 1st of England, 1272 - 1307. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

The Interesting Queens South Africa Medal to Australian Born Trooper Arthur Porteous who served with Lord Kitcheners Fighting Scouts and was wounded in action. He then worked as a prominent horse trainer in Ballarat and won the Richmond 1000 in Sydney

Together with letters written to Lord Kitchener, copy of newspaper articles regarding Porteous horse training; and South Africa Soldiers Association (S.A.S.A.)button badge.

Arthur William Porteous was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1881. He enlisted in Durban, South Africa at the age of 20 on 21 March 1901. He served with the 1st Kitcheners Fighting Scouts with a consignment of 182 horses. Trooper Porteous was subjected to rigid physical and riding tests as the mounted units played a major role in the Boer War. Trooper Porteous was transferred to 2nd Kitcheners Fighting Scouts and spent much of his time with the Scouts travelling through South Africa.

Kitcheners Fighting Scouts were effective in its mission during the Boer War and were responsible for the capture of many enemy Boers, and the destruction of food and cattle that otherwise would have enabled the Boers to keep the war going. As reward for herding much needed cattle for meat to feed Kitcheners Scouts, Trooper Porteous and 8 Troopers were given three head of cattle each. Porteous sold one of the beasts but still held ownership rights for the other two to which he never received payment , despite writing to Field Marshall Kitchener himself in 1903 (the original letter is included with the lot).

One day on a lone scouting trip a sniper shot his horse from underneath him and a splinter from a follow-up round entered his left eye causing permanent blindness to the eye. Due to his wound he was discharged from the military on 26 September 1901 and returned to Australia.

Porteous found employment at the Ballarat Brewing Company. However, Arthurs love and natural affiliation with horses compelled him to seek employment at the Ballarat horse stables, Ballarat Trotting Club just prior to the First World War. He dedicated himself to his work and as a trainer was successful in training a number of winning horses including Maiden Bells and Happy Voyage. The latter horse, a leading sire that Porteous trained for 11 years, won the Richmond 1000 in Sydney in 1917 and was dubbed "the greatest pacer that has lived in this, or any other country".

Rochelle.jpg (47727 bytes)LEICHHARDT deputy mayor Rochelle Porteous is poised to take the top job when councillors eventually vote on a new mayor.

Councillors were set to meet next week for the ballot to choose the next mayor but a definite date is still doubtful

almost two months since mayor Jamie Parker promised to resign.

Cr Parker could now chair his second council meeting as mayor on May 24 after winning the seat of Balmain in the March state election.

``Yes, I am a candidate for mayor,’’ Cr Porteous said. ``I will be contesting it.’‘

Cr Porteous has been endorsed by her five Greens colleagues and, with the backing of Independent John Stamolis, is certain to get the nod.

``I will be supporting the party the community has chosen, `` Crtamolis.
said.

``I think stability in leadership is an important thing.’‘

Cr Porteous said former deputy mayor Michelle McKenzie would bid to reclaim her old title.

Labour councillor Darcy Byrne was tight-lipped about whether he would again put his hat in the ring after he had contested the position in 2009.

The Life of a Convict - Australia’s Beginnings

Name : Joseph Garland was sentenced to transportation for life. His convict Records describe him as being 5 feet 4.5 inches tall, Fair complexion, Light brown hair, narrow face and light grey eyes. His trade was given as stone mason. He was transported to Tasmania on the Circassian which arrived on the 16th Feb 1833 Whilst serving as a convict Joseph Garland was repeatedly charged with various offences including neglect of duty , using indecent language and in one case moving Government stone from a works depot contrary to orders. He was flogged on at least seven occasions and also received other forms of punishment such as hard labour and solitary confinement. Despite his record he was recommended for a conditional pardon on 24th march 1846, which was approved on 21st of September 1847. Joseph Garland was born 1813 the son of Thomas Garland, (Butcher) and Grace Barratt of Plymouth Devon. He was 19 years old when he committed the offence of breaking and entering and was to pay dearly for the offence. Joseph was sentenced to life imprisonment on the 16th. March 1832. This was commuted to transportation for life to Van Diemens Land. A transcript of his indictment reads "The jurors for our Lord the King upon their oath present that heretofore towit at the aforesaid (or adjourned or other...) General Quarter Sessions of the Peace holden at the Guildhall for the borough of Plymouth on Monday the tenth day of January in the first year of his present Majesty's reign, one Joseph Garland, hereinafter mentioned was convicted of felony in that the said Joseph Garland, herein after mentioned was convicted of felony in that the said Joseph Garland, late Parish of Saint Andrew in the borough of Plymouth in the County of Devon, labourer and one Thomas Lee (this name has been struck out) late of the same place, afterwards to wit on the first day of February in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and thirty two, with force and arms at the parish aforesaid in the borough and county aforesaid, the dwelling house of one Samuel Webber the Younger, there situate, feloniously did break and enter and in the same dwelling house then and there, feloniously did steal and take away ten pieces of the current silver coin of the realm called shillings of the value to twelve pence each of the monies of the said Samuel Webber and one security for payment one money, to wit one bill of exchange for payment of the sum of ten pounds and of the value of ten pounds , the said bill of exchange being at the time of committing the felony aforesaid, the property of the said Samuel Webber and the sum of money payable and secured by and upon the same there remaining due and unsatisfied to the said Samuel Webber. Against the forms of the statute and such case made and provided against the peace of the said Lord the King, his crown and dignity"..

Chambre Samuel Webber, the Younger, Samuel Dard, Richard May, Eliza Kidman, John Hosking, Lindsay Frost, Witnesses sworn in court Signed C. Lewis Joseph

Garland left Plymouth England on the 14th October 18 32 as one of 186 male convicts aboard the "Circassion" all bound for Hobart and all arrived without loss of life after being aboard for at least 125 days on the 16th February ] 833. This, we assume, can be attributed to the efforts of the Ship's master Geo. Douthwaite and Surgeon Wm. Porteous. His was described as being 5'4" tall, age 19 complexion fair with a small head, light brown hair and whiskers with a narrow forehead, low eyebrows, light brown hair and light grey eyes, his mouth and chin were described as small and he had a pockmark on the left comer of the mouth. Joseph did not adapt well and in his first six months in the colony he absconded with of course the appropriate punishment at the time. His records indicate that he received 210 lashes in 7 separate sessions. This would indicate he had a fairly rough time especially when doing his six months hard labour in Launceston jail in 1833-34. Again in 1838-39 he had another rough time. It seems once one gets known for one's misdemeanours the power of the law falls heavy His convict record reads as follows Nov 12 1833 PW (or PM) absconding 6 months imprisonment and hard labour Launceston gang IWL Dec 17 1833 Chain Gang Neglect of duty One month imprisonment and hard labour in addition to his former The Convict Muster for 31 December 1833 shows 882, Joseph Garland assigned to the Public Works RC Gang Jan 7 1834 Chain gang neglect of work 25 lashes Mar 1 1834 Chain gang .......? Mary Hackett had been tried at the Dublin City Assizes for receiving stolen apparel, three shirts, one pair of shoe s and a silk handkerchief. She was sentenced to transportation for seven years. Her convict records describe her as being 4'9" tall wit h a fresh complexion, an oval face with dark brown hair and blue eyes. Mary only had two blemishes against her name and these were not long after she arrived 7th Sept 1841 Superintendent Lock Disobedience of orders Six days solitary without blankets and assigned to his service 14th Oct 1841 Wilson Absent three days and nights without leave Two months at the wash tub and then assigned in the ..? Joseph Garland and Mary Hackett applied to be married late in 1842. Their request was sent to the Muster Master on the 16th. October 1842 and the Secretary on the 19th November 1942. Approval would have been given shortly thereafter. They were married at the Pontville Church according to the rites of the United Church of England. Witnesses at their wedding were Thomas Peltham and Ann Connor. At the time of the wedding Mary was six months pregnant with her first child. The Convict Muster for 31st. December 1841 shows 882, Joseph Garland Circassion Ticket of Leave PRO Microfilm 79, Page 87 This was the start of his move to freedom. A Ticket of leave was a document given to give them freedom to work and live within a given district of the colony until their sentence expired or they were pardoned. TOL convicts could hire themselves out or be self employed. They could also acquire property. Church attendance was compulsory as was appearing before a magistrate when required. Permission was needed before moving to another district and passports were issued to those convicts whose work required regular travel between districts. Convicts applied through their masters to the bench magistrates for a TOL and needed to have served a stipulated portion of their sentence. 7 year terms needed 4 years service with 1 , or 5 years with 2 masters, 14 years needed 6 years with 1 , 8 years with 2 or 12 years with 3 masters. Liters, as Joseph was, needed 8 years with 1, 10 years with 2 or 12 years with 3 masters. Joseph Garland was recommended for a Conditional Pardon on the 24th March 1846 but this was not approved until 21st . September 1847. Joseph had been a prisoner of the Crown 15 years, six months and six days. Two of his children Joseph and James were born before he was granted his pardon. All of his children would have been deemed to be "currency kids" this is, the children of a convict. Joseph Garland and Mary Hackett settled in the Green Ponds area and had six children that we known of Joseph born 10th March 1843 James born 26th October 1844 Grace born 24th July 1846 William born 1848 John born 1851 Mary Ann born 1853 Joseph died from ulceration of the stomach on the 1st. November 1878 with Mary dying only a few months after her husband with cancer of the womb. They were both buried at Kempton but as yet, whereabouts is unknown.

My son and family visited the Louvre in Paris in October and found an exhibition entitled "Porteuses d’offrandes"

The Carrier of Offerings
Statuettes carrier offerings: Upper Egypt, Thebes, stuccoed and painted wood, Middle Kingdom, Dynasty XI, Cairo / Paris, the Louvre Museum

In the funeral chapel of the tomb of Akhethotep

Porteuses.jpg (176580 bytes)

When you enter this room 4 of the Department of Egyptian Antiquities from the Louvre Museum at hand for now, and before entering the chapel on your right, you can only find a window (numbered 1) that you offers another procession, in the round this time with such carrier offerings. Which are arranged such that they all just seem to head the monument of Akhethotep.

All statues of young women in the parade restored, except the last, come from the tombs in the necropolis of Assiut, Lycopolis the Greeks, in the hills on the left bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt.

These four carriers of all offerings uncovered at Assuit date from X11th century BC
